The American movie, radio, TV and stage actress, Margaret O’Brien (born Maxine O’Brien and also known as Angela Maxine O’Brien; January 15, 1937) is one of the few surviveing actresses in the Golden age of Hollywood cinema.

The German-born American director and screenwriter Henry Koster (born May 1, 1905, Berlin, Germany—died September 21th 1988, Camarillo, California, United States), a number of popular films including various pieces of music as well as The Bishop’s Wife (1947) and Harvey (1950).

He spent his adolescence in Berlin and painting and cartooning included his early passions. In 1925 he started his cinema career as a scriptwriter and eventually contributed to around 50 films. He made his directing debut with Thea Roland in 1932. After Adolf Hitler took office in 1933, Koster, a Jew, left Germany and filmed some European films before going to the US in 1936. He signed with universal studios and worked immediately with producer Joe Pasternak on a series of musicals with Deanna Durbin, a youth who Universal believed will compete with the star Shirley Temple of the Twentieth Century-Fox. The frothy movies—including Three smart-girls (1936), One hundred men and a girl (1937), who received the Academy’s Best Picture Award nomination, and First Love (1939)—were extremely popular and saved the studio from bankruptcy. It began with Eve (1941) was Koster’s sixth and last movies to star Durbin. It was probably the finest film of the actress.

Koster and Pasternak moved to MGM following romantic comedy Between Us Girls (1942), when he recycled Durbin’s Formula for Music For Millions (1944), in which Margaret O’Brien cast with Jose Iturbi’s Orchestra as the little sister of a musician (played by June Allyson). Two more musical pieces were played in Boston (1946), with the ballerina students Allyson, Kathryn Grayson and Jimmy Durante, and Unfinished Dance (1947), the last time Koster worked with Pasternak. Koster left behind the light musicals that had defined his career until now (1947). Cary Grant was a Christmas favourite who came to Earth to help a bishop (David Niven) and his wife (Loretta Young) collect funds for their church. He was nominated for the best film for the Academy Award, and Koster won his sole Oscar node for direction.

O’Brien was the dance student who idolised a ballerina (Cyd Charisse) and was the latter of the two other musical works: Two Sisters from Boston (1946), featuring Allyson, Kathryn Grayson, and Jimmy Durante, and The Unfinished Dance (1947). Koster started in the 1950s with Wabash Avenue, a musical about a producer (Victor Mature) and a bar owner (Phil Harris) battling in Chicago’s 1890s for a singer (Betty Grable). Grable returned with a husband-and-wife radio duo who wanted to adopt a kid for the emotional My Blue Heaven (1950). Koster then made greatly anticipated (1950) Harvey, starring James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd, a guy whose best friend is an unseen enormous rabbit, one of his most recognised portrayals. Mary Chase assisted to adapt her winning Pulitzer play and Josephine Hull took back the Broadway role of her sister Dowd’s.

For her precocious performances in 15 movies in the 40s, legendary actress Margaret O’Brien has been labelled “America’s Sweetheart.”

Your duet has gone down in film history. Miss O’Brien appeared in “Jane Eyre” (1944), “Little Women” (1949) and “The Secret Garden” in particular (1949).
