Margaret Coldwell Hassan (born February 27, 1958) is an American politician and lawyer who now serves as the junior United States Senator for the state of New Hampshire. Hassan, a Democrat, was elected to the Senate in 2016 while serving as New Hampshire’s 81st governor, a position she held from 2013 to 2017. Hassan is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, and a Brown University graduate with a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law. She worked for the legal firm Palmer and Dodge after graduating from law school in 1985. She then worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as an assistant general counsel.

Hassan initially campaigned for the New Hampshire Senate in 2002 after being recruited by Democratic Party officials. She was defeated by incumbent Senator Russell Prescott in 2002, but campaigned again in 2004 and won. From January 2005 until December 2010, Hassan was elected to three two-year terms, representing New Hampshire’s 23rd district. In 2008, she was elected to the State Senate as Majority Leader, but she was defeated in a rematch with Prescott in 2010. Hassan worked as an attorney from 1985 till 1999. She worked in the Boston legal firm Palmer and Dodge from 1985 through 1992.

Hassan served as Associate General Counsel for Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Partners Healthcare of Boston from 1993 to 1996. Hassan started working at Sullivan, Weinstein and McQuay, a Boston corporate defence and commercial law company, in 1996. Governor Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire nominated her as a citizen adviser to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission’s Advisory Committee in 1999. Hassan ran for the New Hampshire Senate for the first time in 2002 after Democratic Party officials encouraged her to do so. Senator Russell Prescott, the incumbent, defeated her 54 percent to 46 percent. She ran against Prescott again in 2004 and won by a margin of 52 percent to 48 percent.

She was re-elected in 2006, defeating Natalie Healy 60 percent to 40 percent. She defeated Lee Quandt by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent in 2008. During her six years in the State Senate, she served as the assistant Democratic whip, president pro tempore, and majority leader. East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Kingston, Newfields, Newmarket, Newton, Seabrook, South Hampton, and Stratham are all part of New Hampshire’s 23rd district.
