Margene Adkins played for many American football leagues, including the NCAA, the NFL, and the CFL. He signed with the Canadian Football League’s Ottawa Rough Riders as a wide receiver while he was only a teenager. Adkins was selected to the CFL All-Star squad in 1969 after he established a league record for the best average gain per pass catch with 25.0 yards. This record lasted for the next twenty-eight seasons. He played a key role in the Rough Riders’ 24-21 victory against the Calgary Stampeders in the 1968 Grey Cup, and he was a member of both of Ottawa’s Grey Cup-winning teams in 1968 and 1969.
Adkins was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 1970 NFL Draft. Adkins signed with the Cowboys for the 1970 season, but with all-star wideouts like Lance Alworth and Bob Hayes already on the roster, he mostly served as a punt and kick returner for the Cowboys. He played with the Cowboys when they won Super Bowl VI in 1971, and then he joined the Saints the next season when he averaged 23.7 yards per run on kickoff returns for a club total of 1,020 yards. A series of injuries forced him to end his career with the New York Jets in 1973. As a member of the World Football League’s Chicago Winds in 1975, he caught 12 receptions for 130 yards and one score. The 1975 WFL season was the last for the Winds, who went 1-4 before disbanding. Adkins was picked up by the San Antonio Wings in the dispersal draught from the Chicago Winds, although he never actually played for them.
