Maria Cantwell Bio
Maria Cantwell (born October 13, 1958 in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2000 and took office the following year. Previously, she served in the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995.
Cantwell was born in Indianapolis, the daughter of a politically active construction worker. She attended Miami University of Ohio on a Pell Grant and obtained a bachelor’s degree in public administration there in 1980. Cantwell briefly studied at the university’s Luxembourg branch before returning to Ohio to assist for former Cincinnati mayor and media personality Jerry Springer’s gubernatorial campaign. She relocated to Seattle following Springer’s defeat to assist on Sen. Alan Cranston’s unsuccessful 1984 presidential run.
Cantwell then worked in public relations before standing for the House of Representatives in Washington state in 1986. She was elected and re-elected from 1987 until 1993. She ran successfully for the United States House of Representatives in 1992, and was elected the following year. She served one term before losing a 1994 reelection bid. Cantwell then worked for Progressive Networks (later RealNetworks), a Seattle-based Internet business, as vice president for consumer products. In 2000, she ran against long-serving United States Senator Slade Gorton and defeated him by the narrowest of margins, garnering 48.7 percent of the vote to Gorton’s 48.6 percent. In 2001, she was elected to the Senate.
Cantwell was seen as a moderate Democrat, voting consistently with her party and supporting President Barack Obama’s administration. She was especially concerned with energy policy and the environment, and she battled to prevent offshore oil extraction in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Cantwell also introduced legislation aimed at conserving land and water, and she fought for expanded health care and educational opportunities for children.
The House of Representatives is one of the two chambers of the bicameral United States Congress, created by the United States Constitution in 1789.
The House of Representatives and the United States Senate each have equal legislative authority. As envisioned by the Constitution’s framers, the House intended to embody popular will, with members elected directly by the people. In comparison, Senate members were appointed by the states until the Seventeenth Amendment (1913) allowed direct election of senators.
Seats are allocated based on population within states, and membership is reapportioned every ten years in conjunction with the decennial census. Members of the House of Representatives are elected to two-year terms from single-member districts with roughly equal population. The constitutional qualifications for House membership are a minimum age of 25 years, seven years of citizenship in the United States, and domicile in the state from which the member is elected, though he does not have to reside in the area he represents.
Originally, the House of Representatives consisted of 59 members. The number increased after North Carolina and Rhode Island ratified the Constitution in 1790; the first Congress (1789–91) adjourned with 65 representatives. By 1912, membership stood at 435. After the accession of Alaska and Hawaii as states in 1959, two additional representatives were added briefly, but at the following legislative apportionment, membership restored to 435, the amount authorised by a 1941 legislation.
