He was born on January 30, 1942, and passed away on September 27, 2018. Martyn Jerel Buchwald was the son of Catherine Eugenia “Jean” (née Talbot) and Joseph Buchwald when he was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Balin “launched” the band from the Matrix. Grace Slick and Balin shared the role of co-lead singer for the band throughout its incarnation from 1966 to 1971. After Surrealistic Pillow (1967), Balin’s creative productivity decreased as Slick, rhythm guitarist/singer Paul Kantner, and lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen evolved as composers.
