American football fullback Michael Joseph Alstott is a former member of the National Football League. He was a member of the Buccaneers for 12 consecutive seasons. His alma mater, Purdue, was a great place for him to play collegiate football. Alstott started at fullback and on the ground for the Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII and was named to six Pro Bowls throughout his career. Alstott was taken by the Buccaneers with the 35th overall pick in the second round. The Buccaneers used Alstott as more of a running fullback than the blocking fullbacks that were becoming more common. He participated in Super Bowl XXXVII (2002), which was held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, and was won by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Alstott scored the first touchdown in Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Super Bowl history, covering 15 yards on the ground. Five of his catches went for a total of 43 yards.
After considering retiring at the end of the 2006 season, Alstott instead signed a one-year deal to remain with the Tampa Bay Rays for the next 2005 season. However, neck issues forced him to spend the whole 2007 season on injured reserve, and he eventually retired on January 24, 2008. Alstott and former teammate Warrick Dunn, who was subsequently signed by the Falcons, starred in an ESPN Fantasy Football television ad in the summer of 2007, just before Alstott sustained the neck injury that would terminate his season and career. The NFL Network’s list of the “Top Ten Power Backs” placed him at #10.
