The American League’s Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball club headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota (AL). Before moving to Minnesota in 1961, the Twins played in Washington, D.C. (1901-60) as the Senators. Three World Series championships and six American League pennants have been won by the team. When the American League was formed in 1901, the Washington Senators were one of the initial eight teams to join. The early Senator teams were utter failures, finishing in last or second-to-last place for a staggering nine straight seasons between 1903 and 1911 with some of the worst winning percentages in baseball history.

Newspaper writer’s renowned bon mot sums up the team’s season: “Washington—first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League.” Future Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson was the lone bright light for these Senator teams, with a 2.17 ERA over the course of his 21-year big league career, all of which he spent in Washington. In 1921, power hitter Goose Goslin joined Johnson, and the two of them led the Senators to their first pennant triumph and World Series championship in 1924.

The latter won in a dramatic manner in the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 7 of the World Series against the New York Giants. In 1925 and 1933, the Senators made it back to the World Series, but they were defeated both times. Even after signing one of baseball’s all-time great power hitters in Harmon Killebrew in 1954, the Senators still finished last in the American League every year from then on, with their last postseason appearance coming in 1933. In 1961, with the baseball market in Minneapolis on the rise, the Senators moved there.
