Band Bio

Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band founded in 1981 in Los Angeles. Bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, lead guitarist Mick Mars, and lead singer Vince Neil formed the band. Mötley Crüe’s albums have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. They have also achieved On January 17, 1981, bassist Nikki Sixx left the band London and began rehearsing with drummer Tommy Lee and vocalist/guitarist Greg Leon to form Mötley Crüe.

Lee had previously collaborated with Leon in the band Suite 19.  and the trio practised together for a while, but Leon eventually decided not to join them. Sixx and Lee then began looking for new members, and they soon met guitarists Robin Moore (Jeff Gill]and Bob Deal, better known as Mick Mars, after responding to an advertisement in The Recycler that read: “Loud, rude, and aggressive guitar player available.” According to the band’s biography The Dirt, Mars auditioned for Sixx, Moore, and Lee and was hired, while Moore was fired at the same session.  Despite the fact that a lead vocalist named O’Dean was auditioned,] Lee knew Vince Neil from their high school days at Charter Oak High School in Covina, California

Mars suggested Neil join the band after seeing him perform with the band Rock Candy at the Starwood in Hollywood, California. Neil initially declined the offer, but as the other members of Rock Candy became involved in outside projects, Neil became eager to try something new. Lee inquired once more; Neil was hired on April 1, 1981, and the band played its first gig on April 24 at the Starwood nightclub. I wanted a band that sounded like a cross between David Bowie and the Sex Pistols and Black Sabbath. —Nicole Sixx  The newly formed band had no name yet. Sixx has stated that he discussed with his bandmates the possibility of naming the band “Christmas.” The other members were not enthusiastic about the idea. Then, while trying to come up with a name, Mars remembered a time when he was in a band called White Horse and one of the other band members referred to the group as “a motley looking crew.” He remembered the phrase and later spelled it ‘Mottley Cru.’ After slightly modifying the spelling, “Mötley Crüe” was eventually chosen as the band’s name, with Neil suggesting the stylistic decision to add the two sets of metal umlauts, allegedly inspired by the German beer Löwenbräu, which the members were drinking at the time

Allan Coffman, the thirty-eight-year-old brother-in-law of a friend of Mars’s driver, became the band’s first manager. ]The single “Stick to Your Guns/Toast of the Town” was released on the band’s own record label, Leathür Records, which had a pressing and distribution deal with Greenworld Distribution in Torrance, California. Too Fast for Love, the band’s debut album, was self-produced and released on Leathür in November 1981, selling 20,000 copies. Coffman’s assistant Eric Greif organised a Canadian tour, while Coffman and Greif used Mötley Crüe’s success in the Los Angeles club scene to negotiate with several record labels, eventually signing a recording contract with Elektra Records in early 1982. To coincide with the tour, the debut album was re-mixed by producer Roy Thomas Baker and re-released on August 20, 1982, two months after its Canadian Warner Music Group release using the original Leathür mixes.Mötley Crüe was inspired to collaborate with Roy Thomas Baker on Too Fast for Love after listening to Queen. He’d walk in and say, “Hello Darlings…” and listen for about thirty minutes before leaving. And we’re like, “Wait, what?!?” “Whither is he going?” But, man, he produced Queen, so we had to have him produce us as well. —Timothy Lee

Several high-profile incidents occurred during the “Crüesing Through Canada Tour ’82.” First, the band was arrested and then released at Edmonton International Airport for wearing their spiked stage wardrobe (considered “dangerous weapons”) through customs, and Neil for arriving with a small carry-on filled with porn magazines (considered “indecent material”); both were staged public relations stunts. The confiscated items were eventually destroyed by Customs. Second, on June 9, 1982, while performing at Scandals Disco in Edmonton, a bogus “bomb threat” against the band made the front page of the Edmonton Journal[36], prompting Lee and assistant band manager Greif to be interviewed by police. Greif, once again, staged a public relations stunt. Finally, Lee threw a television set from the Sheraton Caravan Hotel’s upper storey window. According to the Canadian rock magazine Music Express, the band was “banned for life” from the city.  Despite the fact that the tour ended prematurely in financial disaster, it served as the foundation for the band’s first international press.

Coffman was replaced as manager of the band in 1983 by Doug Thaler and Doc McGhee. McGhee is best known for managing Bon Jovi and, later, Kiss, beginning with their 1996 reunion tour. Greif later sued all parties in a Los Angeles court. Mötley Crüe has seven platinum or multi-platinum albums, nine Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart (including 1989’s Dr. Feelgood, Mötley Crüe’s only number one album), twenty-two Top 40 mainstream rock hits, and six Top 20 pop singles. Several short-term lineup changes occurred in the 1990s and 2000s, including the addition of vocalist John Corabi (who replaced Neil from 1992 to 1996) and drummers Randy Castillo and Samantha Maloney, both of whom filled in for Lee after his departure from Mötley Crüe in 1999; he returned to the band in 2004. Neil announced in September 2018 that Mötley Crüe had reformed
