Nicole Byer Bio

After growing up in New Jersey, Byer made the move to New York City in the early 2000s. She was employed as a server at a restaurant and cabaret club in the area. In her own words, she recalled how the experience eventually encouraged her to pursue her interest in improv: “They would pay me a lot of money because they thought I was extremely hilarious. You need to get out of here as soon as possible. ‘You’re not very good at this,’ I say. Byers’ parents died when she was in her adolescence and early adulthood, her mother while she was in high school, and her father when she was 21 years old, a tragic coincidence.

She has stated that comedy helped her cope with the deaths of both of her parents, and that “it was a godsend that I had discovered these things before they died away so that I could escape” from their deaths. After that, she enrolled in lessons at the Upright Citizens Brigade, where she began performing improv and sketch comedy in June 2008, the same month that her father was laid to rest. Throughout the years, she continued to do improv and sketch comedy before launching her stand-up comedy career in 2013.

Byer graduated from the Certificate Program in Professional Performance at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. During an interview with Brit+Co, Byer expressed her support for body positivity, saying, “Body positivity, to me, means accepting the body that you’re in…” It is possible to change your appearance, but it is preferable to remain in the skin that you are now in for the rest of your life.  No one is actually unattractive. You’re always attracted to someone, and you’re always unattractive to someone else.” Byer has stated that she “doesn’t identify as straight,” but that she is uncomfortable with the labels “bisexual” and “queer.”

She has also stated that she “doesn’t identify as straight.” For example, she has claimed on her podcast Why Won’t You Date Me? that she is open to dating persons of either gender and that she has previously dated both men and women. The comedian and roommate John Milhiser, as well as her two rescue dogs named Clyde and Charlie, currently reside in Los Angeles with her two rescue canines Clyde and Charlie. On network television, Byer was seen in a number of different roles in 2016.

That year, she appeared in supporting roles on three shows: MTV’s commentary show Girl Code; a hidden camera prank show called Ladylike, which was also broadcast on MTV; and Party Over Here, a half-hour sketch comedy created by Paul Scheer and the Lonely Island, which was broadcast on Fox but was canceled after one season because of low ratings. While serving as a commentator on the show Girl Code, she has been referred to as a “liked talking head” by Maitri Mehta at Bustle, while Stephanie Merry of The Washington Post has referred to her as “one of the most dependably humorous commentators” on the show.

Nicole Byer wiki

Byer has appeared as a guest star on a number of shows, including BoJack Horseman, Transparent, and Bob’s Burgers, among others. In 2017, she appeared as Lizette in the fifth season, episode seven of the Freeform series Young & Hungry. She served as a guest judge on the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars, in which she was paired with RuPaul. Since March 2018, Byer has co-hosted the Netflix original bake-off series Nailed It! with chocolatier Jacques Torres, who serves as the series’ top judge.

Each episode shows three amateur bakers with a “poor track record” attempting to make highly intricate desserts for a chance to win a $10,000 cash prize on the show. She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Competition Program twice, in 2020 and 2021, and she won the award in the latter year. The nomination is the first time a Black woman has been nominated in this category. Because her humor is “not kid-friendly,” her commentary is edited after it has been recorded to generate the “feel-good G-rated comedy” that the show is known for producing. In only 13 days, a full season of television is shot.

Byer’s life was the inspiration for the single-camera comedy Loosely Exactly Nicole, which premiered on MTV in 2016. The show was created and starred by Byer, and it was based on her experiences. The show’s premise, according to Madeleine Davies at Jezebel, is a “comedic look at Byer’s life as a black actress trying to make it in Hollywood.” The fifth season of Loosely, Exactly Nicole began on MTV on September 5, 2016. After one season, the show was later canceled. It was quickly picked up by Facebook Watch for a second season, which aired in 2017.

After launching Why Won’t You Date Me? on the HeadGum podcast network in December 2017, Byer decided to make it a weekly show. With the help of a different guest, usually another comic, each episode involves Byer speaking candidly about her lack of dating experience, past sexual experiences, and dissatisfaction with being single. In addition, the guest provides feedback on her Tinder profile. Byer closes each episode by asking the guest host if they would date her if they weren’t already dating her. Past guests have included Sasheer Zamata, a very close friend of hers, Emily Heller, and Brooks Wheelan, among others. The show has been praised by critics for being “bold” and “refreshing.” The show left HeadGum in 2021 to become a member of Conan O’Brian’s Team Coco podcast network.

In 2019, Byer and Sasheer Zamata co-hosted a podcast on the Earwolf audio network called Best Friends, in which they discussed the meaning of friendship. The program is released once a week. Some of the guest stars have included actresses June Diane Raphael and Case Wilson, drag queens Katya Zamolodchikova and Trixie Mattel, and internet personalities Keith Habersberger and Zach Kornfeld of The Try Guys, among others. In addition to co-hosting the RuPaul’s Drag Race recap podcast Drag Her with comedian and actor Mano Agapion, Byer also co-hosts the 90 Day Fiance recap podcast 90 Day Bae with fellow comedian and actor Marcy Jarreau. RuPaul’s Drag Race recap podcast Drag Her has also included Byer as a guest on the show.

After graduating from college in 2020, Byer and Lauren Lapkus started a weekly podcast called Newcomers on the HeadGum podcast network, in which the two friends watch films for the first time and remark on their impressions of each film as first-time viewers of the series. Each episode has a special guest who shares additional information on the series and its characters. Some of the previous guests include John Gemberling, Demi Adejuyigbe, Paul F. Tompkins, and Betsy Sodaro, among others. Season one focused on the Star Wars franchise, with season two focusing on The Lord of the Rings. The third season focused on Tyler Perry’s body of work, and the fourth season will take viewers through the Fast & Furious film franchise, with new co-host Jon Gabrus serving as a guide for the journey.

Her first book, #VERYFAT #VERYBRAVE: The Fat Girl’s Guide to Being #Brave and Not a Dejected, Melancholy, Down-in-the-Dumps Weeping Fat Girl in a Bikini, was launched in 2020. She is now working on her second book, which will be released in 2020. It is both a comic book and a photo book since it has over 100 photos of Byer in bikinis with much of the book written in the form of captions, making it a hybrid of the two genres. “I, Nicole Byer, wrote this book to #1, share my outstanding bikini collection and my hot body with the world, and #2, make other people feel #brave by embracing their bodies as they are,” she explains in the book’s lengthy title.

The term began as a satirical hashtag on Instagram, mocking the way people regularly remark on photographs of obese women wearing minimal clothing, saying things like, ‘You’re so brave,’ and other similar phrases. Allison P. Davis wrote in The Ringer on Byer’s humor, saying that it was “more simply comparable to a raunchier Retta with a tinge of Ilana Glazer’s madcap exuberance. ” She’s sassy, raunchy, a touch goofy, sympathetic but insanely charming, and she’s not afraid to mix her wide comedy with a strong sense of sexual identity.”

Feature writer Jaleesa M. Jones stated in an article for USA Today that “it is precisely Byer’s bold, ribald brand of comedy that landed her in the creative incubator that is MTV, Byer cited Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Turner, and Mo’Nique as some of her first influences and inspirations. Byer has spoken up about a casting experience in which she was encouraged to act out stereotypes about blackness, which resulted in her creating a comedy sketch on the event as well.

It also took Byer until adulthood to understand that adults were making disparaging remarks about the quality of her speech when she was younger, a microaggression she now recognizes as such. In the wake of years of experience with on-set makeup artists who were unable to work on her dark skin tone, Byer learned how to do her own makeup. Byer began to purchase and wear wigs as a result of similar problems with hairstylists, rather than dealing with individuals who did not know how to properly style her hair and get her ready for appearing on film.
