The daughter of an Irish and Barbadian mother and a Turkish father, Yanya is the daughter of two artists. Yanya spent her formative years in Chelsea, London, with both classical music and Turkish music playing in the background. At the age of 12, she had an interest in guitar rock and taught herself to play. Yanya began her musical career informally in 2014 when she posted recordings to SoundCloud; she later declined an invitation to join a female group formed by Louis Tomlinson of One Direction to concentrate on creating her own songs.
Taking a stand against this kind of talent acquisition, she told The Guardian: “Let’s go pick up some kids and tell them we’re forming a band, but they have no idea that we’re going to earn ten times as much as them. This is a really inconsiderate action to do.” After a year, the project was apparently scrapped. In 2016, she released her first extended play titled Small Crimes/Keep on Calling. Do You Like Pain? Came out in 2018, while Plant Feed, her second EP, came out in 2017.
