Norman Abbott was reared in New York City by his mother and his uncle Bud Abbott, the straight man of the famous comic duo Abbott and Costello.

After World War II, Norman Abbott joined the inaugural group of Navy Seals at his uncle’s urging. He worked as a radio announcer on “The Colgate Family Hour” and as a stage manager on “The I Love Lucy Show” to kick off his five-decade-long career in the show industry. Later on, he directed many popular comedies, including “The Jack Benny Show,” for which he was honored with an Emmy in 1965. Many episodes of Leave It to Beaver, Father Knows Best, Get Smart, Bachelor Father, McCale’s Navy, Adam 12, The Munsters, Sanford and Sons, The Brady Bunch, Love, American Style, Stars of Jazz, and The Bob Hope Show were directed by him.


Abbott went on to helm episodes of “Welcome Back, Kotter” and “Alice” in his later years. In 1966, he directed his first film, the offbeat comedy The Last of the Secret Agents, which starred Marty Allen and Steve Rossi. He also dabbled in acting and comedy, appearing in films like “Who Done It?” and “Rio Rita,” both of which starred the legendary comedy duo Abbott and Costello. His wife Dominique, children Christine, William, Jennifer, and Norman Jr., sister Betty Abbott Griffin, a veteran script supervisor, three stepsons, and four grandkids all survive him.
