The Oklahoma City Thunder is an NBA franchise headquartered in Oklahoma City, USA. They compete in the NBA’s Western Conference (NBA). During its first 41 years, the team was situated in Seattle, where it won three conference championships and the 1979 NBA championship as the Seattle SuperSonics. In 2012, the Thunder took first place in the Western Conference. The SuperSonics were the first major North American sports club to call the Pacific Northwest home when they entered the NBA as an expansion team in 1967. To lead a Sonics team that was 5-17 when he was hired and finish in fourth place in the league was quite the feat. The Sonics advanced to the NBA Finals by beating the Los Angeles Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Denver Nuggets, but they were ultimately eliminated by the Washington Bullets in seven games. The next year, the two teams faced again in the NBA Finals, and this time the Sonics, driven by guards Dennis Johnson and Gus Williams and centre Jack Sikma, won in five games to become the first NBA champions in franchise history. Again in 1979–80, Seattle made it to the conference finals before being swept by Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.
