In 2012, the Thunder took first place in the Western Conference. The Sonics advanced to the NBA Finals by beating the Los Angeles Lakers, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Denver Nuggets, but they were ultimately eliminated by the Washington Bullets in seven games. The next year, the two teams faced again in the NBA Finals, and this time the Sonics, driven by guards Dennis Johnson and Gus Williams and centre Jack Sikma, won in five games to become the first NBA champions in franchise history. Again in 1979–80, Seattle made it to the conference finals before being swept by Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers.
