William Oliver Stone is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter. He was born on September 15, 1946 in the United States. Stone is most known for his work on the films Midnight Express (1978), for which he was awarded the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Scarface (1983), a remake of the gangster picture (1983).
Stone rose to popularity in the film industry as the writer and director of the military drama Platoon (1986), which was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. In the first of a series of movies based on the Vietnam War, in which Stone plays the role of an infantry soldier, “Platoon” was released in 1993. He completed the series with Born on the Fourth of July (1989), for which Stone was awarded his second Academy Award for Best Director, and Heaven & Earth (1990).
