An American basketball team called the Orlando Magic is situated in Orlando, Florida. The Magic are a member of the Eastern Conference Southeast Division of the National Basketball Association. When they met in Texas in September 1985, Orlando billionaire Jim L. Hewitt suggested to Philadelphia 76ers general manager Pat Williams that an NBA club be relocated to Orlando. One year later, after leaving the 76ers, Williams joined the investment group as the front man because he was intrigued by the prospect of an NBA club headquartered in Orlando.  The two staged a press conference on June 19, 1986, to declare their plan to apply for an NBA franchise.
