U.S. auto racing legend and current team owner Rufus Parnell Jones was born in the United States on August 12, 1933. Among his many exploits, those he achieved while racing in the Indianapolis 500 and the Baja 1000 stand out. When he qualified at above 150 mph in 1962, he set a new standard for drivers to follow. A memorable incident occurred while he was leading the race with three circuits to go in a turbine car in 1967, but he crashed and lost the race. As an owner, he and Al Unser, Sr., won the Indy 500 in 1970 and 1971. Jones was a multi-vehicle racing champion, having taken the checkered flag in sports cars, IndyCars, sprint cars, midget cars, off-road vehicles, and stock cars. Along with Jim Hurtubise, he is known as one of the “Chevy Twins” for introducing the stock block engine to USAC Sprint car racing.

Due to his success with the Boss 302 Mustang in the 1970s, he has become synonymous with the engine. P. J. Jones, Jones’s son, was also a successful race car driver. He competed in IndyCar and NASCAR, and he won the IMSA prototype sports car championship. A promising young driver, his other son Page Jones was seriously injured in a sprint car accident at the 4-Crown Nationals and has been in rehabilitation with his father-in-law since then. Jones surpassed Jim Rathmann as the oldest surviving Indianapolis 500 champion when Rathmann passed away in 1960.
