Paul Goldsmith is a retired USAC and NASCAR driver who was born on October 2, 1925. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, and the USAC Hall of Fame have all honored him with induction. In his latter years, Goldsmith pursued a career as a pilot, principally operating a Cessna 421 to ferry racing engines and supplies. Presently, Goldsmith holds the title of oldest surviving participant in the Indianapolis 500. During the 1940s and 1950s, Goldsmith won many A.M.A. Grand National Championships on his motorbike. In 1952, he won for the first time on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the Milwaukee Mile, near Harley’s original factory. Paul worked at a Chrysler assembly facility in Detroit.


The Daytona 200 in 1953 was his most illustrious triumph. After that, in the latter part of 1953, he triumphed in a 100-mile (160 km) race on the treacherous cinder track at Langhorne, Pennsylvania. For his efforts, he received the prize for “Most Popular Rider of the Year.” At 1954, Goldsmith won once and finished second four times in the Charity Newsies in Columbus, Ohio. In the first season of the Grand National Series, he finished second, behind just one of his former students, Joe Leonard. He raced for the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) for the last time in 1955, and he won the event at Schererville, Indiana. He regularly participated in stock car races. After being forced by General Motors to compete primarily in stock cars, he retired from motorcycle racing.
