Purdue University’s football team, the Purdue Boilermakers, is based in West Lafayette, Indiana. The Boilermakers play their home games at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette and are members of the NCAA FBS Big Ten Conference. Jeff Brohm is the current head coach of the Boilermakers. In fact, Purdue’s engineering department kept a fully operational steam locomotive, The Schenectady, on hand for research from 1891 to 1897.

The university’s working-class attitude earned its students – and football team – nicknames in the local press such as rail splitters, blacksmiths, foundry moulders, and, yes, pumpkin shuckers. There were even jokes about the football team recruiting players from the rail yard just off-campus. Purdue’s football team defeated Wabash College, a liberal arts college in nearby Crawfordsville, Indiana, 44-0 in 1891.

Following the game, the Daily Argus-News published an article with the headline, “Wabash could have just as easily been nicknamed the Pumpkin Shuckers.” Purdue University, on the other hand, is known as the Boilermakers. It’s a nod to the school’s long-standing reputation as a world leader in engineering education and research, though it started as a joke.

Before the campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, had a mascot, the land-grant institution was known as Indiana University, with whom they compete for the Old Oaken Bucket, but Purdue’s football programme has long been known for its prolific passing quarterbacks, ranging from players who have set School, Big Ten, and NCAA records, to being named All-Americans and finalist for national awards, to being elected to the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

This illustrious tradition has earned the school the moniker “Cradle of Quarterbacks.” Purdue became only the second college in history to produce three different Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks when Drew then teams.

During the seasons during the Joe Tiller era, the football rivalry with Notre Dame became the most heated and competitive, with Joe Tiller-led teams going 5-7 against Notre Dame. In his first season as head coach, Danny Hope won the Shillelagh Trophy with a 24-21 loss. Purdue also has a long-standing rivalry with Illinois, with whom they compete for the Purdue Cannon trophy. From 1993 to 2010, the Big Ten used a rotating system of conference games due to the odd number of teams. Every school was assigned two official rivals, against whom they competed each year.

Purdue’s official rivals were Indiana and Northwestern. Purdue and Northwestern, however, were separated into separate conference divisions after the Big Ten expanded to 12 schools and no longer played each other on an annual basis. Purdue’s new designated cross-division rival will be Iowa beginning in 2011. Both teams’ fans have mocked this matchup.

The other Big Ten cross-divisional rivalries had some history or a trophy to back them up, but Purdue and Iowa were left out. Since then, the SB Nation blogs Hammer & Rails and Black Heart Gold Pants have celebrated the rivalry between the two schools by jokingly referring to each other as “Our Most Hated Rivals,” or simply “OMHR.” The Boilermakers are a member of the Big Ten Conference’s West Division

Purdue was previously a member of the Big Ten’s Leaders Division but due to conference expansion, moved to the West Division in 2014. s. – Following a record-breaking first half, Purdue Women’s Basketball will turn the page after struggles in the second half turned the tide for Wisconsin in a narrow 54-52 loss at the Kohl Center. Abbey Ellis (Melbourne, Australia) led the scoring for the Boilermakers (14-11, 5-9), but all of her points came in the first half. Purdue got five points from freshman guard Jayla Smith after the break (Indianapolis, Ind.).

Junior guard Jeanae Terry (Detroit, Mich.) pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds for the Boilers. The total is also the most rebounds by a Boilermaker this season. Terry’s previous personal best was 16 boards for Illinois against Penn State during the 2020-21 season (Jan. 28, 2021).

Her previous Boilermaker high was 13 rebounds against Ohio State earlier this season (Dec. 21, 2021). Purdue held Wisconsin to just two points in the first quarter (17-2) – the fewest points allowed in a first quarter in programme history. Purdue has the 48th-most victories among NCAA FBS programmes, with a record of 608–560–48 at the end of the 2017 season.

From the 1937 season until 1972, Purdue was classified as a Major College school. Purdue was classified as a Division I programme in 1973, then as a Division I-A programme from 1978 to 2006, and finally as an FBS programme from 2006 to the present.

The Boilermakers have had 64 winning seasons in their history, with 19 of those seasons producing eight or more victories, ten seasons producing at least nine victories, and one season producing ten victories or more. Purdue has produced five unbeaten seasons in its history, going , and 9–0 in 1943. The Boilermakers have won 12 conference championships in their history, including eight Big Ten Conference championships and four Indiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships.
