In between studies and auditioning for jobs, she served at Deaflinks, a local charity that helps the deaf. Shenton’s father went deaf when she was 12 years old as a result of chemotherapy treatment for cancer he had.

Shenton completed a charity skydive in March 2011 to raise money for the National Deaf Children’s Society. Shenton stated in February 2012 that she would be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for the organization, which she did. Shenton was instrumental in the establishment of “Viewtalk,” a social networking website for deaf people, which was launched in May 2011.

In support of Action on Hearing Loss, she climbed to the top of the BT Tower in October 2012. She was engaged to be married to filmmaker Chris Overton at the time. They tied the knot in October of this year. Among her many notable roles, Rachel Joy Shenton is best known for her roles as Mitzee Minniver on Hollyoaks (2010–2013), Lily Summers in Switched at Birth (2014–2017), Joanne Scott in White Gold, and Helen Alderson in All Creatures Great & Small. Shenton is an English actress, screenwriter, and activist.

Shenton was born in London, England. The silent child, a short film she made in 2018, was nominated for an Academy Award. As a child actress, Shenton appeared in numerous television shows, including Holby City and the BBC’s long-running Waterloo Road, which propelled her into the limelight. She has also starred in two British films and appeared in a number of television commercials for the Ministry of Defence, DFS, and Sega Superstars Tennis, among others. In 2008, she continued to make recurrent appearances on television shows such as Nickelodeon’s Genie in the House and Five’s Sophia’s Diary, where she played Sofia’s wayward sister ‘Trisha.’

Mitzeee Minniver, an aspiring glamour model, was cast in Hollyoaks, it was reported in April 2010 that Shenton had been cast in the show. Shenton described her character as being “completely opposite” to herself in her own words. Her appointment was made as part of the substantial overhaul of the serial that was overseen by new producer Paul Marquess.

Shenton drew media attention for her appearance even before her character debuted on-screen, with tabloids speculating on her resemblance to Cheryl Cole before she even appeared on-screen. It was “extremely nice” for Shenton to receive so much attention and be compared to others. Shenton revealed her decision to depart Hollyoaks on the 20th of December, 2012, via Twitter. Shenton’s farewell moments as Mitzeee were shown on February 15, 2013, shortly after the character relocated to the United States of America.

Shenton will make her American television debut in season 3 of the ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, in which she will portray a young student teacher named Lilly Summers. Shenton participated in The Silent Child, a film that she co-wrote and co-produced with her husband Chris Overton, which was released in August 2017. The film was inspired by Shenton’s personal experiences growing up as the child of a deaf mother and father. The titular child is played by six-year-old Maisie Sly, who is profoundly deaf and is appearing in the film for the first time.

The film incorporates the usage of British Sign Language (BSL). In August 2017, the film was awarded the best short film award at the Rhode Island International Film Festival. As a result, it was eligible for consideration for the Academy Awards.

After being selected as one of the final ten films in the Live Action Short Film category for the 90th Academy Awards in December 2017, the film was released in theatres. With James Buckley and Joe Thomas, Shenton joined the cast of the BBC2 comedy series White Gold in March 2019, where she plays motivational speaker Jo Scott, who ends up working as a window salesperson. As Helen Alderson in the Channel 5 and PBS adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, she will begin starring in the series in September 2020. It was necessary to make significant adjustments to the original material (both the previous television series and Helen’s memoir), which allowed the role of Helen to be significantly expanded.

The show has been renewed for a second season, which will begin airing in September 2021. Rachel, a former Painsley Catholic College student, was awarded the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for her work on The Silent Child on March 4, 2018, during the 90th Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. Joanne is a social worker who assists the film’s heroine, a young deaf girl named Libby, in learning how to communicate using sign language. She authored the script and appeared in the film as Joanne.

Rachel’s partner Chris Overton directed the film, and he was on hand to win the prize with her at the celebration in Hollywood. As part of her acceptance speech, Rachel signed her words as she spoke them. “I promised our six-year-old lead actress that I would sign this speech, and I kept my promise.” Please accept my apologies for the slight tremor in my hands.
