Her stepfather is a rabbi, which she finds interesting. Lefevre was reared in a non-denominational environment, yet he considers himself to be of Jewish heritage. She has three sisters and is fluent in both English and French, though she grew up primarily speaking English. She is from the United Kingdom.

She spent two summers studying drama at the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, before enrolling at McGill University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education and literature. In 2009, for every 10,000 people who followed her on Twitter, Lefevre made a $100 donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a breast cancer research organization. In August 2009, she also held an eBay auction to raise money for the nonprofit School On Wheels, which gives tutoring to homeless children in the Southern California region. Lefevre worked as a vendor, selling t-shirts and other stuff that had been autographed by her Twilight co-stars.

Lefevre is a socialist who believes in socialism. She supported Senator Bernie Sanders for President of the United States during the 2016 presidential election. One of Lefevre’s frequent customers, an accomplished Canadian television producer, overheard her discussing her ambitions to become an actor while she was working as a waiter at a sushi restaurant in Westmount. Lefevre’s first audition, for a role in the sitcom Student Bodies, came about as a result of the producer.

She didn’t have a professional headshot at the time, so she sent a Polaroid photograph. She didn’t get the part, but she did get a call back from the casting director, which led to her landing a role in the Canadian television series Big Wolf on Campus in 1999, in which she played the character, Stacey Hanson. Lefevre continued his studies at McGill University in between shots, although he never completed his degree. George Clooney’s film Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was released in 2002, and Lefevre played the role of the dangerous mind.

Lefevre spent many hours creating the clothes for her persona, and she described herself as “obsessed” with vampires after reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula when she was fourteen years old. Lefevre felt overwhelmed at times by the amount of attention she was receiving as a result of her engagement with Twilight. She took part in a promotional tour in November 2008, during which she visited Twilight fans and signed autographs at Hot Topic stores across the United States.

“It’s the closest I’ll ever come in my life to being a rock star,” she said in an interview with The Canadian Press, referring to an appearance on MuchMusic, where more than 1,500 admirers flocked to Toronto to see her perform. When Lefevre came to a Wal-Mart in Salt Lake City to promote the DVD release of the film, he was greeted by more than 2,500 enthusiastic fans. Access Hollywood said that Lefevre expressed shock and sadness at the decision, saying she never imagined she would be “cut from the show over a ten-day overlap.” She added that she was “stunned” by the decision and “greatly saddened” not to continue her depiction of Victoria. “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is an ensemble production that must accommodate the schedules of several performers while maintaining the established artistic vision of the filmmaker and, most crucially, the story,” the studio stated in a counter-statement.
