Canadian guitarist, singer, and composer Randolph Charles Bachman  born September 27, 1943, was a pioneering musician who helped form the bands The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Bachman released albums as a solo artist and with the bands Brave Belt, Union, and Ironhorse, all of which were short-lived. He was well-known throughout Canada for his role as presenter of the popular music program Vinyl Tap on CBC Radio. In 2016, Bachman became a permanent exhibit at the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. Bachman’s parents, Karl (Charlie) Bachman and Anne (Nancy) Dobrinsky are of German and Ukrainian ancestry, and he was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The little prodigy won a singing competition on CKY’s King of the Saddle and began violin lessons at the Royal Toronto Conservatory when he was only five years old.

He took violin lessons until he was 12 years old when he became disenchanted with the regimented approach of the teachers.  Despite his inability to read sheet music, he discovered he could play any piece he had heard before by just listening to it. Bachman was 15 when he watched Elvis Presley on Tommy Dorsey’s TV program; seeing Presley with a guitar around his neck was an inspiration to the young musician. From his cousin, he picked up three chords and began practicing on an altered Hawaiian dobro.Bachman met Lenny Breau when he was 16; over the course of two years, Breau taught Bachman how to play the finger pick. When he first heard Chet Atkins’ music, Breau was the one who turned him onto him.
