Rebecca Hall Bio

Lady Hall was born on the 3rd of May, 1982, in London, the daughter of American opera singer Maria Ewing and English stage director Sir Peter Hall, who was also the founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company. In addition to being of African American and Native American origin, her mother also has Scottish and Dutch ancestry and is a descendant of Bazabeel Norman. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and she was born into a blended family in 1990.  Hall’s mother is the actress Jennifer Caron Hall. Hall went to Roedean School, where she rose to the position of head girl. She was a student at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where she studied English literature before leaving out in 2002, right before her final year.

As a member of the Cambridge university’s student theatre scene, she went on to start her own theatre group. She was a member of the Marlowe Society and appeared in multiple shows with her housemate Dan Stevens, who was then a student of English literature at Emmanuel College at the time of the productions. In 2010, there was widespread media suspicion that Hall and filmmaker Sam Mendes, who was married to actress Kate Winslet at the time, were having an illicit relationship. From 2011 through 2013, Hall and Mendes were involved in a romantic relationship. In 2014, while co-starring in a Broadway musical, Hall met actor Morgan Spector, who became a friend. They tied the knot in 2015. In 2018, they welcomed their first child.

In 1992, at the age of nine, Hall made her television debut as a young Sophy in her father’s television adaptation of Mary Wesley’s novel The Camomile Lawn. This was Hall’s first professional appearance. Her feature film début was in 2006 as Rebecca Epstein in the film adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel Starter for Ten, in which she starred as Rebecca Epstein. Her breakout performance was as Sarah Borden in Christopher Nolan’s film The Prestige, which was her first major cinematic role (2006). From 2007 to 2009, she was featured in various television programs, including Wide Sargasso Sea and Rubberheart. She also participated in the film Joe’s Palace directed by Stephen Poliakoff in 2007.

Vicky, one of the titular characters in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), helped to further establish Hall’s stardom in the entertainment industry. As a result of her outstanding performance, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. As the girlfriend of Michael Sheen’s David Frost, she made her film debut as a supporting character in Ron Howard’s historical drama Frost/Nixon in 2008. Her first major film role came the following year when she was cast in Dorian Gray, a British fantasy-horror film based on Oscar Wilde’s 1890 classic The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Having previously appeared in a brief role in the indie film Please Give, Hall went on to star in Ben Affleck’s criminal drama The Town (2010), in which he co-starred with Affleck and Jon Hamm. For her performance as Paula Garland in the 2009 Channel 4 series Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1974, she was awarded the British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in June 2010. Following that, she appeared as the female lead in the British ghost picture The Awakening, which was released in September of that same year. Lay the Favourite, a comedy-drama film based on Beth Raymer’s memoir of the same name was released in 2012, and she played Beth Raymer.

According to one review, she “plays Raymer as a charming force of nature who somehow manages to survive in a perilous environment by sheer force of character.” Iron Man 3 was released in 2013, and Hall played Maya Hansen, who was previously played by Jessica Chastain. Closed Circuit, a political thriller released the same year in which she made her film debut (2013). Transcendence, in which she co-starred with Johnny Depp in Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, was her next role (2014). In 2015, Hall appeared in the romantic comedy Tumbledown as well as Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut, The Gift, both of which were released. Christine, a 2016 biographical drama in which Hall portrayed real-life newswoman Christine Chubbuck, was a critical success. According to Variety, she is “discomfortingly energetic in the best role she has yet been offered.”

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, in which she played Elizabeth Holloway Marston, a real-life psychologist who was an inspiration for Wonder Woman, was released in 2017. The next year, Hall joined the cast of Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York, reuniting her with the director. After re-reading materials pertaining to the sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen, Hall decided to donate her salary to Time’s Up in January 2018. She explained her decision as follows: “Not only do I realize how complicated this situation is, but I also realize that my actions have caused another woman to feel silenced and dismissed. I regret making this decision and would not make the same one again if I had the chance.” Mirai’s Mother was voiced in English by Hall, who also supplied the English dub (2018).

It is estimated that Hall’s net worth is between $1 million and $5 million dollars. This includes all of her assets, money, and other sources of income.

Her work as an actress, producer, writer, and director provides her with the majority of her financial resources. Hall has amassed a substantial fortune from her numerous sources of income, but she likes to maintain a modest standard of living. Hall was born in the English capital of London. She is the daughter of American opera singer Maria Ewing and English stage director Peter Hall, who founded the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon. Her mother’s ancestors are of African American, Native American, Scottish, and Dutch descent, among other things. Her parents divorced when she was a child, and she was born into a blended family in 1990. Hall’s mother is the actress Jennifer Caron Hall.

The actress stands at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 meters) tall, and her body dimensions (breast-waist-hips) are 31-22-33 inches (81-58-84 cm). She wears a shoe size 9 in the United States and a dress size 2 in the United Kingdom, and she has brown hair and brown eyes. Her “uncomfortably enthusiastic performance in the best role she’s yet been offered” is described as such by Variety. Her portrayal of Elizabeth Holloway Marston, a real-life psychologist who was the inspiration for Wonder Woman, is featured in Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman. The next year, Hall returned to the A Rainy Day in New York cast, reuniting with Woody Allen for the second time.

According to Hall, after re-reading materials related to the sexual abuse claim against Woody Allen, she gave her pay to the Time’s Up organization, stating, “I recognize not just how complicated this situation is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and discarded.” The decision was one I regret, and I wouldn’t make it again if given the chance.” Mother, a character in Mirai, was voiced by Hall in an English translation (2018). The Night House, a horror movie that was released in 2021 and received positive reviews, was Hall’s first feature film appearance in the 2020s. Hall also co-executive produced the film.

Passing premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where it earned positive reviews before its distribution rights were purchased by Netflix for around $16 million in the following year. Her professional theatrical debut was as Vivie in Mrs. Warren’s Profession, a production of Mrs. Warren’s Profession directed by her father at the Strand Theatre in London in 2002. In 2003, she was awarded the Ian Charleson Award for her “admirable” and “accomplished” performance on the show.

In 2003, he organized a season of five plays at Bath’s Theatre Royal to commemorate his father’s 50 years as a theatre director. The season was a success. Among these productions were two in which Hall appeared: she played Rosalind in her father’s production of As You Like It, which earned her a second Charleson nomination, and she played the title role in Thea Sharrock’s revival of D. H. Lawrence’s play The Fight for Barbara, which earned her a third Charleson nomination.

In 2005, Hall reprised her role as Rosalind in a touring production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, directed by her father for the second time. This tour made stops at the Rose Theatre in Kingston upon the Thames, the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York, the Curran Theatre in San Francisco, and the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. This was the second leg of the U.S. tour, which began in 2003 with performances at the Shubert Theater in New Haven, Connecticut, the Columbus Theater in Ohio, and the Wilbur Theater in Boston, among other venues across the country.

In the first Bridge Project part, Hall appeared as Hermione in The Winter’s Tale and Varya in The Cherry Orchard, both directed by Sam Mendes in 2008–09. The project was staged in Germany, Greece, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, all with the same cast as the original production. In 2010–11, she starred as Viola in her father’s production of Twelfth Night at the National Theatre of Great Britain in London. Hall made her Broadway debut in Sophie Treadwell’s expressionist play Machinal, which premiered in 2013. The American Airlines Theatre in New York City will host the Roundabout Theater production, directed by Lyndsey Turner, which will begin previews on December 20th and officially open on January 16th, 2014.
