Redman Bio

“Off the hook” was how Redman recalled his time at West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey, which the teen attended from the age of 13 to 17. Redman was ejected from Montclair State University in 1987, when he was just 16 years old, for poor academic performance. For lack of alternatives, Redman returned to his mother’s house and lived there for a while before she kicked him out for selling cocaine. “DJ Kut-Killa” was Redman’s stage moniker when he was just 18 years old. In various parks and house parties in New York and New Jersey, he performed his rhymes over funk and hip hop instrumentals on vinyl records.

He was born to Darlene and Eddie Noble in Newark, New Jersey, where he was raised. In addition to her brother, Rosalyn Noble, who goes by the stage name Roz, is also a rapper. Over the years, she’s appeared on a number of Redman tracks. Tame One’s cousin is this guy. On MTV Cribs in 2001, Redman showed off his Staten Island home, which was described by XXL magazine as “tiny and grimey” in contrast to the luxury residences generally featured in the series. Redman’s cousin Mr. Cream made an appearance in the episode and slept on the floor under a comforter because the property lacked a doorbell.

The episode has since become “the most infamous, most quoted” episode of the show, according to MTV Vice President of Programming Nina L. Diaz. Redman was quoted as saying in a 2017 interview that he was still living in the property “It’s a little on the small side. There are two separate sleeping quarters. […] With a large house, I’d have no idea what to do with myself “Nonetheless,. The four-month-old pit bull terrier Daddy eventually became Cesar Millan’s “right-hand man” on his television show The Dog Whisperer after Redman began boarding him with the dog trainer.

Erick Sermon of EPMD discovered Redman while he was DJing for Lords of the Underground and working for EPMD. When Erick Sermon first met Redman, he remarked, “I had a feeling he was going to be something special. To begin with. We reconnected the following day. And he relocated to my crib on Long Island in the next two or three months. He came directly over to live in my place.” Redman embarked on an EPMD tour after settling in with Erick Sermon. During the tour, he did everything from carrying the group’s luggage to performing rap freestyle on stage alone. Redman’s life was forever altered in 1990 when he was called onstage by Erick Sermon to perform a rap freestyle at an EPMD event in New York.

He used every letter of the alphabet in his freestyle to describe himself as a rapper. The following year, Redman signed with a big record company and began recording his debut album, What? Thee Album, with producer Erick Sermon. In 1990, EPMD’s Business as Usual featured Redman on the tracks “Hardcore” and “Brothers on My Jock,” marking his official recording debut. What? Thee Album, Redman’s debut album, was released in 1992 and was praised by AllMusic for fusing “reggae and funk inspirations” with a “terse, albeit flowing rap style. In the Billboard 200, it peaked at no. 49, and the album was certified gold.

The Source dubbed him “Rap Artist of the Year.” In 1994, Redman released Dare Iz a Darkside, a follow-up to this album. The first single, “Rockafella,” features samples from two of hip hop’s most sampled songs, “I Wanta Do Something Freaky to You” by Leon Haywood and “Flash Light” by George Clinton. The majority of the tunes on Redman’s second album were produced by the musician himself (later on Redman would let other producers make most of his beats). Erick Sermon, a former mentor of Muddy Waters, produced many of his tracks during this period, including “Pick It Up” and “Whateva Man.”

A Tribe Called Quest’s 1992 video for “Scenario,” featuring Redman, was one of the group’s first major commercial successes. On November 22, 1994, Def Jam Recordings released Redman’s second studio album, Dare Iz a Darkside. Album sales in the United States peaked at 13, according to the Billboard 200 chart. The Recording Industry Association of America awarded the album a gold certification. It’s been said that Redman was on drugs while he recorded the album, and he revealed in 2010 that he doesn’t play it anymore because it was made during one of the worst times in his life. His third album, Muddy Waters, was released on December 10, 1996, and received excellent reviews from critics.

“Whateva Man” and “It’s Like That (My Big Brother)” were two of the album’s Billboard hits. In the video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, the song “Do What You Feel” was featured on the soundtrack. On February 12, 1997, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issued a gold certification for the album. Method Man and Tupac both appeared on Tupac’s All Eyez On Me double album on the song “Got My Mind Made Up” around this time. On the Hard Knock Life Tour in 1999, Redman made a stop at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Def Squad and Redman’s debut collaboration, El Nino, was released as a single in 1998. In 2000, his fourth studio album Doc’s Da Name 2000 was a huge success, selling platinum and breaking his previous record of gold sales. “I’ll Bee Dat,” “Da Goodness,” and “Let Da Monkey Out” all made it into the Billboard Hot 100.

As a result of his newfound friendship with labelmate Method Man, he was invited to join him on the track “Well All Rite Cha” from Doc’s Da Name 2000. Method Man and Redman collaborated on an album, Blackout!, in 1999. It was originally titled “Amerika’s Most Blunted,” but it was altered to “Blackout!” for commercial reasons. To keep his fans happy since the release of Malpractice, Redman has released Ill At Will mixtapes with various members of his new record label Gilla House, including Saukrates, Icarus, Ready Roc, E3, Young Heat, and Melanie. Members under Redman’s Gilla House imprint include these artists and more.

Christina Aguilera’s 2002 single “Dirrty” is Redman’s most well-known international hit. He also appeared on a remix of Pink’s song Get This Party Started at this period. Till I Collapse, Eminem’s favorite rapper beats out Jay Z, 2Pac, and Notorious B.I.G. among others in the rapper’s list of favorite rap artists. Relatives and even Shaquille O’Neal have benefited from Redman’s work as a producer under his real name, Reggie Noble. Originally intended for release in 2008, Blackout! 2’s release has been postponed multiple times for various reasons. After releasing a version of their classic Broken Language on the internet in early 2008, Smoothe da Hustler and Trigger Tha Gambler fuelled speculation that Blackout! 2 was in the works.

There was even more fuel for this myth when they played at the University of Florida in Gainesville. A Blackout! LP was originally set to be released on December 9, 2008, but was recently delayed until the first quarter of 2009. On May 19, 2009, it was eventually released. It debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, No. 2 on the Top Rap Albums, and No. 7 on the Digital Albums charts, selling 63,000 copies in its first week of release. Canadian albums charted the album at No. 10. SoundScan reports that as of December 12th, 2009, the album had sold 160,375 copies in the United States.

Redman revealed in May 2009 that his next solo album would be out in December of that year. Reggie Noble “0” 912 is the project’s name. Three singles (“Coc Back,” “Oh My,” and “Money on My Mind”) from the album were released, and the album’s name was altered to Redman Presents Reggie. The music video for the first song, “Coc Back,” was filmed and published. In reality, none of the tunes made it into the final album but were instead used as promotional singles. He said Reggie Noble (Redman’s birth name) does the album rather than Redman in an interview. “Poppish” tracks, rather than his usual “rugged,” and “hardcore,” songs, will be on Redman’s upcoming album, according to the rapper. Finally, Redman Presents… Reggie was released on December 7, 2010, after several delays.

There is a video for “Def Jammable,” the band’s first official song. Soprano and Redman have been announced to participate in a remix of Fabri Fibra’s song “Tranne Te” together. Method Man and Redman co-starred in the 2001 stoner comedy film How High, which depicted two high-school students striving to make it at Harvard while high on marijuana. When asked about How High 2, Redman revealed that he and Method Man are working on the follow-up to the original film. In Seed of Chucky, Redman has a starring part.

Both Method Man and Redman have made appearances in video games such as Def Jam Vendetta, Def Jam: Fight for NY, and Def Jam: Icon as tag team teammates, and in 2003–2004 they had their own Fox sitcom called Method & Red. Redman assumes the role of the “conscience” in the music video for Offspring’s song “Original Prankster,” directing the “Original Prankster” what pranks to commit. “Pixes Rap” is a song performed by Method Man and Redman in the 2004 Nickelodeon cartoon The Fairly OddParents, School’s Out! The Musical.

A character named Redman appears in the True Crime: New York City computer game, released in 2006. According to the citations cited above, He lends his voice to a mini-game in which he tries to flee New York City during the rioting. In addition, he makes a brief appearance in the main plot. The inaugural season of VH1’s Scared Famous premiered on October 23, 2017, and Redman was revealed as the presenter in August 2017.
