Richard Childress is a former race car driver in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) who was born on September 21, 1945 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He rose to become one of the wealthiest individuals in North Carolina as the owner of Richard Childress Racing (RCR), which is an acronym for Richard Childress Racing. In 2004, he established a vineyard in the Yadkin Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) close to Lexington. He served as a director on the board of the National Rifle Association. Both of his grandchildren, Austin and Ty Dillon, are professional race car drivers for NASCAR. It was in 1969 when a drivers’ strike at Talladega Superspeedway led NASCAR president William France Sr. to hunt for replacement drivers that Richard Childress got his start in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR).
By 1971, Richard Childress started competing in auto races as a driver for himself with the number 96. In 1976, as a way of paying respect to Junior Johnson, he moved to position 3.
