Clary was the fourteenth and last of a large French family. He began his singing career when he was only 12 years old. The German conquest of France in 1942 resulted in Clary and 14 members of his immediate family being taken to Germany and imprisoned at the Buchenwald detention camp. Only he made it out alive. After the fact, he said that he realised his singing had been the key to his survival. After the war and the Nazi takeover, he returned to Paris and learned that not all of his family had been transported to the death camps. When Clary resumed her singing, she did it once again. After being discovered by Harry Bluestone, he quickly began recording songs that would propel him to fame in both France and the United States.
His arrival in the United States dates back to 1949. In 1950, Clary made an appearance on American television, at which time he performed a French comic act on The Ed Wynn Show. Soon after, he was introduced to Eddie Cantor by Merv Griffin. Clary’s marriage to Natalie Cantor Metzge, Cantor’s daughter, took place in 1965, and it all started with a chance encounter with the latter. After making an impression there and in New York’s La Vie En Rose nightclub, he was cast in such hit Broadway shows as New Faces of 1952, Seventh Heaven, Around the World in 80 Days, Irma La Douce, and Cabaret. As an actor, he has participated in various Hollywood productions, such as The Tall Men, The Thief of Damascus, New Faces of 1952, and A New Kind of Love.
