With a deep, raspy voice that he used throughout his five decades in the industry, Fuller was a household name in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to his roles as Jess Harper and Cooper Smith on the hit Western series Laramie and Wagon Train, respectively. Leonard Leroy Lee Fuller was born to dance teacher Betty Simpson on July 29, 1933, in Troy, New York. Betty had married Robert Simpson, Sr., an officer in the Navy Academy before he was born. His family relocated to Key West, Florida, in 1939 when he was 6 years old. In Florida, he attended a dance academy that his parents had established. After a year in the Windy City, he and his family returned to sunny Florida. Simpson Jr., as he was then called, went to Key West High School for his ninth year after spending fifth and sixth grade at Miami Military School.

In 1948, when he was 14 years old, he quit school because he hated going and was not succeeding academically. At 16, he moved to Hollywood, California, with his family. He got his start in the industry as a stunt guy. At the age of 18, he was promoted from his position as a doorman at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to that of Assistant Manager. After much encouragement from his peers, the then-Robert Simpson Jr. changed his name to the more famous Robert Fuller and joined the Screen Actors Guild to pursue a career in acting.
