Bob Casey Jr. Bio
Bob Casey, Jr., full name Robert Patrick Casey, Jr., (born April 13, 1960, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2006 and took office the following year.
Casey is the eldest son of Bob Casey, Sr., a conservative Democrat who served as Pennsylvania’s governor from 1987 to 1995. After graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in 1982 as a Roman Catholic, the younger Casey taught fifth grade in Philadelphia as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps the following year. He then attended the Catholic University of America (where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1988) and entered private practice in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He married Terese Foppiano in 1985 and the couple went on to have four children.
Casey joined politics in 1996, when he ran for and was elected state auditor general, a position he held from 1997 to 2005. In 2002, he ran for governor but failed in the primary. Casey served as state treasurer from 2005 to 2006, during which time he campaigned for the United States Senate. He easily defeated Republican incumbent Rick Santorum.
Casey developed a reputation as a moderate to conservative-Democrat following his election in 2007. While he was a staunch supporter of gun rights, he favored background checks and initiatives to regulate the sale of assault weapons to civilians. As a child advocate, he introduced legislation to improve financing for early childhood education and assisted in reauthorizing a program that funded pediatrician education. Casey was opposed to abortion but was an outspoken advocate for marriage equality.
He also played a role in the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy that prohibited openly gay men and women from serving in the United States military. Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), an abbreviation for the former official United States policy (1993–2011) prohibiting homosexuals from serving in the military. The term was coined in 1993 when President Bill Clinton issued a law (comprising statutes, regulations, and policy memoranda) requiring military personnel to “do not ask, do not tell, do not pursue, and do not harass.”
When it took effect on October 1, 1993, the policy technically abolished a World War II-era ban on homosexual service, however in practise it maintained a formal prohibition. The House of Representatives and the Senate voted to repeal the programme in December 2010, and President Barack Obama signed the legislation into law on December 22. On September 20, 2011, the policy came to an end.
Between his election as President in November 1992 and his inauguration in January 1993, Clinton proclaimed his intention to expeditiously abolish the US military’s long-standing prohibition on homosexuals serving in its ranks. Although many Americans welcomed the move, particularly homosexual activists who backed Clinton’s campaign, and Clinton had pledged action during the election campaign, few political analysts believed he would act so swiftly on such a potentially contentious issue.
The action drew widespread resistance, particularly from Sen. Sam Nunn, a Georgia Democrat who served as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Indeed, Clinton’s announcement brought the president into conflict with senior military officers and a number of critical civilians charged with oversight of the armed forces.
Clinton eventually won support for a compromise solution that allowed homosexual servicemen and women to remain in the military if they did not publicly identify their sexual orientation, a policy that became known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Military officials, on the other hand, were largely opposed to that strategy, fearful that the mere existence of homosexuals in the military would destroy morale. The policy was further undermined by discrimination lawsuits that maintained gays’ freedom to serve openly in the military.
