Former racing car driver Roberto José Guerrero Isaza (born November 16, 1958) is a Colombian-American. Beginning with his debut on January 23, 1982, he became the first Colombian to start a Formula One Grand Prix and went on to compete in a total of 29 races. After the 1983 season, Guerrero decided to leave Formula One since he had failed to score any championship points and had little hope of driving for a competitive team. He started out well in Indycar racing, earning Rookie of the Year accolades in both the CART and Indianapolis 500 in 1984. With just two CART race victories to show for all his early potential, he ultimately fell short. He had a major accident in that same year, one that put him into a coma for 17 days.
Guerrero’s appearances in the Indianapolis 500 are especially noteworthy. On two separate instances, he was very certain of an absolute victory but was ultimately foiled by unfortunate circumstances. After qualifying first in 1992, he lost control and crashed on the pace lap. Two times Guerrero finished second, and five times he finished in the top five. From 1992 to 1996, he also held the qualifying speed record. It was announced in 1988 that Guerrero will be competing in the International Race of Champions. When Guerrero was 19, he applied for and was granted U.S. citizenship. He and his family live in San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, California. Guerrero has just resumed racing, but in a new discipline. In the illustrious Baja 2000, he made his off-road racing debut. Since then, he’s been a tour guide for Wide Open Baja and a racer in the Baja 1000.
