Roy Blunt Bio

Roy Dean Blunt (born January 10, 1950) is an American politician who has represented Missouri in the United States Senate since 2011. He formerly served as a member of the Republican Party in the United States House of Representatives and as the Secretary of State of Missouri. Blunt is a graduate of Southwest Baptist University and Southwest Missouri State University, and was born in Niangua, Missouri (now Missouri State University). He was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Missouri’s 7th congressional district in 1996 after serving as Missouri Secretary of State from 1985 to 1993. From 2003 until 2009, he was the Republican Whip in the House of Representatives.

When Blunt was named county clerk and top election officer of Greene County, Missouri, in 1973, he began his political career. He was re-elected three times and served for a total of 12 years in the office. Bill Phelps, the current Republican Lieutenant Governor, campaigned for governor in 1980. Blunt, the Greene County Clerk, chose to run for the vacant seat and won the Republican primary, but lost the general election 56 percent to 44 percent to State Representative Ken Rothman.

After incumbent Democratic Secretary of State James Kirkpatrick announced his retirement in 1984, Blunt campaigned for the job and won the Republican primary with 79 percent of the vote. He was elected in the general election, defeating Democratic State Representative. After incumbent U.S. Representative Mel Hancock kept his promise to serve just four terms, Blunt decided to run for the United States House of Representatives in 1996. Blunt ran in Missouri’s 7th congressional district, which is located in the Ozark Mountains in the southwest and is the state’s most conservative district. The Rely on Your Beliefs Fund is Blunt’s political action committee. He defeated Gary Nodler 56 percent to 44 percent in the Republican primary on August 6, 1996.

He beat Democrat Ruth Bamberger 65 percent to 32 percent in the general election. Blunt supports the No Child Left Behind Act and voted in favour of school prayer. He supported school vouchers in the District of Columbia but opposed larger legislation. The United States Chamber of Commerce gave Blunt a 97 percent grade. He backed initiatives to reform bankruptcy rules in the United States, requiring customers seeking bankruptcy protection to return a greater portion of their debts. Blunt opposes federal cap-and-trade legislation and favours oil drilling off the coast of the United States.

“There isn’t any genuine science to claim we are affecting the temperature or course of the Earth,” he says of man-made global warming. Blunt voted to prevent gun makers and dealers from being sued if the firearms they make or sell are later used in a crime. He’s also voted to make it mandatory for anybody buying a gun at a gun show to go through a background check. The House Republican Health Care Solutions Group was led by Blunt. In 2006, Blunt was successful in getting laws passed that restricted the use of over-the-counter cold medications in the manufacture of methamphetamines.

Retail and drug lobbyists opposed the measure, dubbed the Combat Meth Act. In two separate media interviews in August 2009, Blunt said that because he was 59 years old, “if I shattered my hip, I couldn’t get it replaced in either Canada or Great Britain.” He said he heard the assertion made by “some persons who are supposed to be experts on Canadian health care” in Congressional testimony. According to the St. Petersburg Times’ PolitiFact service. Blunt voted for President George W. Bush’s proposal to partially privatise Social Security for people under 55 years old in 2005. AARP said of Blunt in 2016: “In 2010, he stated that he was still sympathetic to the concept of private Social Security accounts.

His stance hasn’t changed, but he’s been saying for years that it’s not a feasible issue for anyone.” Blunt was named Chief Deputy Whip, the highest appointed position in the House Republican Caucus, after only one term. He was the Republican Party’s top vote counter in that position. Blunt was chosen to succeed fellow Texan Tom DeLay as House Majority Whip in 2002, after Dick Armey resigned and fellow Texan Tom DeLay was chosen to succeed him. After DeLay was arrested on felony campaign finance charges, Blunt took over as Majority Leader on an interim basis in September 2005. Blunt launched his candidacy for permanent replacement of DeLay on January 8, 2006, one day after DeLay declared he would not seek re-election.

Blunt claimed that the majority of the Republican caucus had backed him as DeLay’s replacement in a press release dated January 14, 2006. On the second round, however, U.S. Representative John Boehner of Ohio won with 122 votes to 109 for Blunt in a secret ballot poll on February 2, 2006. During the 110th Congress, House Republicans elected Blunt to the second-highest post, Minority Whip, in November 2006. For the job, Blunt easily beat Arizona Representative John Shadegg. After two consecutive election cycles in which House Republicans lost seats, he announced his resignation in late 2008, avoiding a tough struggle with his deputies.
