In the 1974 season, Slack took on the unique position of both owner and manager of the baseball team. Winston-Salem franchise owner and veteran minor league operator Joe Buzas was attempting to sell the team during the 1973–1974 offseason. Slack and two local partners bought the club from him in the end for a reported $20,000. Some have argued that this deal makes Bill Slack the first owner-manager in professional baseball since Connie Mack departed from the Philadelphia Athletics of Major League Baseball 25 years ago. This is according to Bob Moskowitz, a sports journalist for the Newport News Daily Press.

Slack, a native of Ontario, Canada, moved to Winston-Salem and settled there permanently. In the early 2000s, the Carolina League’s Winston-Salem Warthogs honored Slack with an annual community service award. When Dennis Bastien took over as owner of the Winston-Salem “Red Sox” after the 1983 season, he rebranded the club as the “Spirits” and gave them a striking new purple and green color scheme. For one more year, the Spirits played as Boston’s minor league affiliate. In 1985, Winston-Salem switched parent clubs from Boston to the Chicago Cubs.

After two further rebrandings, the team once known as the Winston-Salem Red Sox is still active today. The team has now changed its name to the Winston-Salem Dash and joined the High-A East, which replaced the defunct Carolina League.
