In the 1974 season, Slack took on the unique position of both owner and manager of the baseball team. Winston-Salem franchise owner and veteran minor league operator Joe Buzas was attempting to sell the team during the 1973–1974 offseason. Slack and two local partners bought the club from him in the end for a reported $20,000. Slack, a native of Ontario, Canada, moved to Winston-Salem and settled there permanently. For one more year, the Spirits played as Boston’s minor league affiliate. In 1985, Winston-Salem switched parent clubs from Boston to the Chicago Cubs.
