Stan’s career started in earnest in 2003 with a part on Law & Order, after an appearance in the 1994 movie 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance. This was followed by a number of cinematic roles, such as Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, The Architect, and The Covenant, until he was cast as Carter Baizen in a recurring role on Gossip Girl, starting in 2007. As Jack Benjamin, Stan played the main character in the 2009 television series Kings.

He played the antagonist Blaine in both the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine and the ballet thriller Black Swan by Darren Aronofsky in 2010.  He played Bucky Barnes, a character from the Marvel Comics, in the 2011 movie Captain America: The First Avenger. Although it was his debut movie in the MCU, it was not covered under his nine-picture deal with Marvel Studios.  Stan subsequently said that he had trouble paying his rent for approximately a month after the movie came out.

He appeared in the suspense thriller Gone, the supernatural horror movie The Apparition, and he started playing the Mad Hatter in recurring roles on Once Upon a Time in 2012. His first episode, “Hat Trick,” received a “outstanding” review from The A.V. Club, and was included on their list of the 30 greatest episodes of 2012 from programmes that didn’t reach the top list. As a result of Stan’s commitment to the MCU, it had been initially reported that the role would be recast for the spin-off series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. However, Edward Kitsis later confirmed that the character would not be recast because of fan backlash and respect for Stan’s performance, and the series would move forward without the character.

He also starred as the disturbed homosexual son of the former First Lady in the USA Network miniseries Political Animals the same year, for which he was nominated for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries. At the American Airlines Theater in New York, Stan portrayed Hal Carter in the Roundabout Theater Company’s 2013 production of William Inge’s Picnic.
