Michael Shawn Michaels is an American former professional wrestler who is presently contracted to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) as a coach and producer in NXT. The Mexican professional wrestler Jose Lothario became Hickenbottom’s mentor. Hickenbottom changed his name to “Shawn Michaels” while in training. Shawn Michaels debuted in 1984 under the name Shawn Michaels for the Mid-South Wrestling and Texas All-Star Wrestling (TAW) organizations after training with Lothario. During Michaels’ stay with TAW, Chavo Guerrero, Sr. presented Michaels and Paul Diamond with the TAW Tag Team Championship. As a side job, he helped run Central States Wrestling. There, he and his tag team partner, Marty Jannetty, won the Central States Tag Team Championship by defeating the Batten Twins, only to have the title taken away from them.
Throughout 1985, Michaels also made many appearances for World Class Championship Wrestling, located in Dallas, Texas. At the age of twenty, Michaels made his national wrestling debut in the American Wrestling Association (AWA), once again paired with Marty Jannetty. After a victory against Doug Somers and Buddy Rose, the duo became known as The Midnight Rockers and went on to win the AWA World Tag Team Championship. The World Wrestling Federation, an opposing organization, signed The Rockers in 1987. Two weeks later, because of the bar incident, they were sacked from WWF. Thereafter, they went back to AWA, only to be re-signed by WWF a year later.
