Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science professor and animator, developed the American animated comedy television series SpongeBob SquarePants  for Nickelodeon. It tells the story of the titular character’s exploits with his aquatic companions in the imagined undersea metropolis of Bikini Bottom. The Intertidal Zone, a 1989 instructional comic book by Hillenburg intended to educate his pupils about marine life, served as the inspiration for many of the series’ themes. In 1996, he started working on turning SpongeBob SquarePants into a TV show, and in 1997, he proposed a seven-minute pilot to Nickelodeon. Hillenburg desired SpongeBob to be an adult character; the network’s management wanted him to be a kid attending school.  To allow SpongeBob to attend school as an adult, he created Mrs. Puff and her boating school as a compromise rather than ending the series.
