Disney, in full The Walt Disney Throughout the 20th and 21st century, the Walt Disney Company (Walt Disney Productions from 1929–1986) was the most well-known American provider of family entertainment. In 1920, Walt Disney started working as an animator for the Kansas City Film Ad Company in Missouri. Famous animators including Hugh Harman, Rudolf Ising, and Isadore (“Friz”) Freleng joined Disney and Iwerks in their venture. Disney made the live-action/animation hybrid short Alice in Cartoonland in 1923 with the intention of making it into a series. Disney declared bankruptcy and uprooted his family from Kansas City to pursue a career in filmmaking in Los Angeles shortly after its completion. Due to the unexpected success of Alice in Cartoonland, Walt Disney reopened his studio in Hollywood with the support of his brother Roy, a longtime business partner. The Kansas City crew quickly relocated to California to join the Disneys, and for the next four years, Disney focused almost exclusively on Alice features.
