When Gilliland was just three years old, his parents bought him a pink Barbie corvette with modified pedals and an extra battery so he could drive it at breakneck speeds. He then started racing quarter midgets on a local dirt track. After waiting two years at his father’s urging, he entered competitive racing two years later.

In 2012, he dominated the quarter midget scene, accumulating 34 victories and titles in three different regions (West Coast, USAC World Formula National Quarter Midget Championship, and North Carolina Quarter Midget Association). A year later, he entered his first three restricted late model races. His first limited late model race victory came in 2014 at Ace Speedway, where he started from the pole position. His first victory came in a late model event later that year at Southern National Motorsports Park.
