Ty Burrell Bio
Tyler Gerald Burrell was born on August 22, 1967, in Grants Pass, Oregon, to teacher Sheri Rose (née Hauck) and family therapist Gary Gerald Burrell (1940–1989). He was the son of Gary Gerald Burrell (1940–1989) and Sheri Rose (née Hauck) Burrell. He was the son of Gary Gerald Burrell (1940–1989) and Sheri Rose (née Hauck), a family therapist who worked in the field of family therapy.
In addition to having a primarily English and German line of ancestry, he has recently discovered that he also has African ancestry, thanks to the assistance of Finding Your Roots, through his great-great-grandmother, who was once an enslaved female from Tennessee who eventually became a homesteader in Oregon. Originally from Oregon, he grew up in the town of Applegate, which is close to the California border.
He attended Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass, Oregon, where he was a lineman for the Hidden Valley Mustangs football team and was also involved in other sports, such as basketball. Following graduation, he went on to study theatre arts at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1993 and went on to serve as the school’s commencement speaker in 2008.
Among his other accomplishments, he was named the school’s commencement speaker in 2008. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival was where she met her future spouse while working as a bartender during her undergraduate years. College years were spent at the University of Oregon when he was initiated into the Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduating from Penn State University with a Master of Fine Arts in acting, he joined the Theatre 100 Company, which comprised actors such as Keegan-Michael Key and other well-known names.
The Utah Shakespeare Festival in 1999 gave Burrell the opportunity to participate, and he received positive feedback for his performance. Furthermore, he has said that he lived out of his car for a period of time while attending graduate school in order to save money. A year later, on August 18, 2000, Burrell tied the knot with his long-term girlfriend Holly.
They lived in New York City until 2008 when they migrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, where they currently reside. They still own a two-bedroom apartment in the Astoria neighborhood of New York City, which they rent out on a short-term basis to tenants in need of a place to stay. As a result of Burrell’s work on the television sitcom Modern Family, the couple spent a period of time in Southern California. Burrell and his wife revealed in March 2010 that they had adopted a newborn girl, who was followed two years later by another kid.
Burrell’s first credited cinematic performances were in the 2001 films Evolution and Black Hawk Down, both of which starred Colin Farrell. As a result of this, he appeared in the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, as well as in other stage performances (including the 2000 Broadway revival of Macbeth and the off-Broadway plays Corners, The Blue Demon, Burn This, and Show People), and a number of motion pictures.
As a co-writer and actor in the original production of the eccentric comedy The Red Herring of Happiness, directed by Russell Dyball, he contributed to the original production, in which he also appeared. The off-Broadway play Babble, which he both created and performed in, is one of Burrell’s many theatre credits, as is his cooperation with his brother, Duncan, on the same production.
Also, he appeared as a New Jersey prosecutor in the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, in which he played a New Jersey prosecutor and in the film Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Later, Burrell was cast in the CBS sitcom Out of Practice (2005–06), which was structured in a similar manner by writer Christopher Lloyd and in which he played Oliver Barnes, a shallow but well-intentioned cosmetic surgery specialist.
Despite the fact that eight episodes had yet to be shown in the United States at the time of cancellation, the show was canceled in May 2006. The next year, he had an appearance in the film Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, in which he played Allan Arbus, which was released after the show ended. Following a brief cameo as the curator of the White House in the 2007 film National Treasure: Book of Secrets, he landed a starring part in the Fox sitcom Back to You, which premiered later that year.
He is married and has two children. On the show, which was produced by Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, Burrell played the role of a field reporter in the field (alongside Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton). Despite receiving poor ratings, the show was canceled in 2008. He appeared as Leonard Samson (without abilities), a character who was briefly connected with Betty Ross during the filming of the 2008 Marvel film adaption of the comic book The Incredible Hulk, which was released in 2008.
He had a big role in the critically acclaimed ABC situation comedy Modern Family, in which he played real estate agent Phil Dunphy, who was also created by Christopher Lloyd and Steve Levitan. As a result of his work, he received eight consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (2010–2017), and he won the award twice, in 2011 and 2014.
For his performance in the series, he was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series. In addition, he and his co-stars were nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for their respective performances.
His victory over Alec Baldwin, who had previously won the award for best actor seven years in a row, earned him the SAG award for best actor in 2014. Phil, the character played by Burrell in the National Association of Realtor’s commercials, is also featured in other commercials.
An overall arrangement with 20th Century Fox Television was signed by Burrell in November 2014, which will allow him to develop his own comedic projects for the network. He will continue to work with 20th Century Fox while also building his own production company, Desert Whale Productions, which will be operational in July 2020. He will maintain his overall agreement with the studio.
During the summer of 2016, Burrell’s web sitcom Boondoggle, which is partially based on his actual life, made its debut on ABC.com, ABC, and other platforms and has since achieved worldwide acclaim. A Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series was presented to him in July 2017, and he was nominated for the award. He also received a nomination in the same category the following year.
Bar X and Beer Bar, both of which are joined by linking doors and are located next to each other on the same floor, are among his businesses. He also owns The Eating Establishment, a restaurant in Park City, Utah, as well as two pubs in Salt Lake City, Bar X and Beer Bar.
The month after Salt Lake City’s bars and restaurants were forced to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Burrell and his wife invested $100,000 of their own money to launch Tip Your Server, a crowd-sourced online fund to assist out-of-work wait staff in Utah, where they had previously maintained their primary residence. Mr. Burrell has been a lifelong supporter of a variety of teams, including the Oregon Ducks, the Portland Trail Blazers, the New York Mets, and the St. Louis Rams (now known as the Los Angeles Rams after their relocation to California).
