 Bio

The UCLA Bruins football team competes in college football as a member of the Pac-12 Conference at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. The Bruins have had several periods of success in their Wfootball season. The Bruins lost their season opener 13–3 at Michigan State, who went on to become the country’s top-ranked team. The unheralded Bruins would go undefeated for seven games, surprising national powers like Syracuse and Penn State.

The conference championship and the 1966 Rose Bowl were on the line in the 1965 UCLA–USC rivalry football game, which UCLA entered ranked seventh.. 6 USC, led by Heisman Trophy winner Mike Garrett, led 16–6 until UCLA scored with four minutes remaining on a pass from Gary Beban to Dick Witcher. UCLA recovered an onside kick after the two-point conversion made the score 16–14.  Beban then connected on a 50-yard bomb to Kurt Altenberg, and UCLA won 20–16.

UCLA then faced all-white Tennessee in the newly constructed Liberty Bowl stadium in Memphis, Prothro’s hometown.  On the final play of the game, Tennessee defensive back Bob Petrella intercepted a UCLA pass to preserve a Volunteer victory by a score of William H. Spaulding arrived at UCLA from Minnesota in 1925.

In 14 seasons as head coach of the Bruins, he had an overall record of all sets.  During his tenure in Los Angeles, Spaulding led the Bruins to their first bowl appearance and victory, the 1938 Poi Bowl. Beginning in 1928, the Bruins left the SCIAC and joined the Pacific Coast Conference under Spaulding’s leadership. Spaulding’s 72 victories rank him among the best in Bruin football head coaching history. He stepped down after a successful fourteen-year tenure that ended after the 1938 season

Horrell’s 1939 team went 6–0–4, and his 1941 team went   With the exception of the 1942 season, the Bruins’ combined record outside of the aforementioned seasons during Horrell’s tenure was  As a result of his struggles, Horrell was fired after six seasons as the head coach of UCLA football.

His alma mater hired coach Bert LaBrucherie to replace Horrell.  LaBrucherie had a 23–16 overall record at UCLA. In his second season as head coach, the Bruins won the Pacific Coast Conference but fell to Illinois in the Rose Bowl.  During his four seasons, LaBrucherie’s Bruins only had one losing season, a 3–7 record in 1948, which turned out to be his final season. Following the 1948 season, LaBrucherie accepted the position of head football coach at the California Institute of Technology, leaving UCLA.

The era of Red Sanders (1949–1957) Red Sanders transferred from Vanderbilt to UCLA.  With an overall record of 66–19–1 (.773) at UCLA, he was arguably the best coach in school history, winning the school’s only national championship in football in 1954. As UCLA’s head coach, Sanders led the Bruins to three Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) titles, two Rose Bowls (1953 and 1955 seasons), and a 6–3 record against archrival USC.

When he replaced the navy blue jerseys with “baking powderkeg blue,” added the shoulder stripe to give the impression of motion, and changed the number style from block to Clarendon, Sanders established the distinctive football uniforms worn by the Bruins.  Sanders explained that the changes were made to make it easier to see his Bruins on grainy black-and-white game films at the time. Second-place USC, whom the Bruins defeated 34–0, instead competed in the Rose Bowl, where they were defeated 20–7 by Big Ten Conference champion and eventual co-national champion Ohio State. Henry Sanders was also known for inflaming UCLA’s rivalry with USC. [10] Before every game against a cross-town rival, his teams were always given a speech that ended with “Beat SC!” Regarding the rivalry, Sanders is credited with the following famous quote.

“It is not a matter of life and death to defeat ‘SC. Before the 1958 season, was history had been ranked in the top ten of the AP Poll at least once in each decade since the poll’s inception in the 1930s. Under head coach Red Sanders, they had their first major run of success in the 1950s. Sanders led the Bruins to the Coaches.

A poll national championship in 1954, three conference championships, and a 66–19–1 overall record in nine years. During Terry Donahue’s tenure as head coach in the 1980s and 1990s, the Bruins went 151–74–8, including 13 bowl games and an NCAA record eight straight bowl wins. The program has produced 28 first-round NFL Draft picks, 30 consensus All-Americans, and numerous major award winners, including Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban. The main rival of the UCLA Bruins is the USC Trojans. Chip Kelly took over as head coach in 2018.
