Wally Dallenbach Sr., originally from East Brunswick Township, New Jersey, was born on December 12, 1936 and is a retired Indy car driver. Between 1965 and 1979, he competed in 180 Indy Car races, winning five times. Wally Dallenbach Jr., a race car driver and pundit, is his son. Dallenbach and A. J. Foyt battled for many laps, and Dallenbach was very close to winning the 1975 Indianapolis 500. For the first half of the race, he was in the lead, but on lap 162, twelve circuits before the race was abandoned due to rain, he burned a piston. A red flag caused Bobby Unser to take first place in the race, which ended after 174 laps (435 miles).
