Wesley Snipes Bio

Snipes was born in Orlando, Florida, to Marian (Long) and SMSGT Wesley Rudolph Snipes, a teacher’s aide and an airframe and powerplant engineer. he was born and raised in New York City’s South Bronx neighbourhood and soon realised that dance and the theatre were his true calling. For his high school education, he went to Fame High School for the Performing Arts. When his mother moved to Orlando, Florida, before he could graduate from high school, his ambitions of a career in the musical theatre (and perhaps a few commercials) disappeared.

A bus-n-truck theatre company (Struttin Street Stuff) he started with two friends and two teachers from his “Drama Class” at Jones High School (S. Porro and K. Rugeri) was instrumental in his high school’s (Jones High) induction into the International Thespian Society, Orlando Chapter and helped lay the groundwork for what would become Dr. Phillips High Schools’ theatre arts programme. Rooted in musical theatre Orlando’s Snipes performed acrobatics and song-and-dance routines at local parks and restaurants.

At Purchase College in New York, Snipes received a Victor Borge Scholarship that allowed him to attend the world-renowned professional theatre arts programme at the State University of New York at Purchase. In the years following his BFA, he appeared in a few soap operas and nighttime dramas before making his Broadway debut to much critical acclaim. It took place in a Broadway theatre.

In the audience, an agent observed him and invited him to audition for his first starring part in a feature-length film. The Wildcats of Goldie Hawn (1986). Passenger 57’s action hero was born out of athletic parts like those in New Jack City (1991) and Passenger 57 (1993). (1992). Wesley believes that at least with the Hollywood giants, namely Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Dennis Hopper, and Sean Connery, he must be doing something right. Amen Ra Films Production Company was formed by Wesley, who is also a Black Belt in Multi-System Combat Arts IT Technologist and Venture Capitalist.

When Snipes was 12 years old, he began studying martial arts. The 5th degree in Shotokan karate and 2nd degree in Hapkido is his highest ranks. Additional martial arts instruction includes capoeira under Mestre Jelon Vieira, kung fu under Master Shaolin at the Shaolin Temple in the United States, as well as BJJ and kickboxing classes.

During his time in New York, Snipes was trained to fight by Brooke Ellis, a friend, and mentor who was there with him. Jelani Snipes was born to him and April Snipes (née Dubois) during their first marriage, which was featured in Snipes’ 1990 film Mo’ Better Blues as a cameo. Nakyung “Nikki” Park married Snipes in 2003, and the couple has four children together. Converting to Islam in 1978, Snipes returned to Christianity in 1988.

“Islam made me more mindful of what African people have accomplished and my own self-worth, and it gave me some dignity,” Snipes stated in a 1991 interview. The World Trade Center’s Twin Towers collapsed following the September 11 attacks, destroying Snipes’ New York City residence.

At the time, he was on the West Coast. An A.D. Snipes, a comedian and half-brother of Snipes’, also lives in San Antonio, TX. On TNT, the younger Snipes appeared in the classics Rough Riders and Buffalo Soldiers and on Comicview and Def Comedy Jam, among other shows. Snipes grew up in the South Bronx of New York City. He began training in martial arts at the age of seven since he was undersized for his age and lacked the strength to defend himself from a larger opponent.

He decided at the age of 12 that he wanted to pursue a career in acting after obtaining a minor role in an Off-Broadway production of The Me Nobody Knows.  He studied acting, music, and dancing until then. Shortly after graduating from the State University of New York at Purchase in 1986, he made his film debut in Wildcats and participated in other theatrical and television projects, among them Miami Vice and All My Children.

Snipes rose to fame in 1990 when he starred in Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues as a musician. It wasn’t until the following year that his performance as a Harlem drug baron in the film New Jack City won him critical praise. His role as an African American architect in Jungle Fever, also directed by Lee, earned him praise in 1991. Passenger 57, which Snipes starred in in 1992 after his performances in White Men Can’t Jump and The Waterdance, saw him take on the role of an airline security expert fighting terrorists.

Snipes’s quick rise to the Hollywood elite was largely due to his film portrayals of action heroes who routinely outfight, outshoot, and outsmart the “bad guys,” like Sean Connery (aka James Bond) and Sylvester Stallone (aka Rambo), his co-stars in Rising Sun (1993) and Demolition Man (1993). When he appeared in Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! in 1995, Snipes was cast as Noxeema Jackson, a cross-dresser, a role he had never done before. The actress Julie Newmar. The Fan (1996), U.S. Marshals (1998), and Maya Angelou’s directorial debut, Down in the Delta (1998) were among his subsequent features.

The blade was Snipes’ return to action films in 1998 when he played a vampire hunter. Following the success of Blade, the sequels Blade II and Blade: Trinity were released (2004). In addition to 7 Seconds (2005) and The Contractor (2006), Snipes appeared in a number of direct-to-video films, including (2007). In Brooklyn’s Finest (2009), he portrayed a heroin dealer, and in The Expendables 3, he played an assassin named Doctor Death (2014). In the 2015 television drama The Player, he played a mysterious criminal ruler.

Actor Wesley Snipes played a leader in the gang drama Chi-Raq (2015) directed by Spike Lee. Dolemite Is My Name (2019), a biopic with Eddie Murphy as a black blaxploitation star, was his next film project. In the film Coming 2 America, he reunited with Murphy (2021). In addition to acting, Snipes co-wrote (with Ray Norman) the action thriller Talon of God (2017), which explores the relationship between faith and science.

Tax returns were not filed by Snipes between 1999 and 2001, resulting in a 2006 conviction. He was sentenced to prison in 2010 and freed in 2013, respectively. One count of conspiracy to defraud the United States was filed against Snipes, Eddie Ray Kahn, and Douglas P. Rosile on October 12, 2006, as well as one count of aiding and abetting a false and fraudulent claim for payment against the United States.

Additionally, Snipes was charged with six counts of deliberately failing to file federal income tax forms by the due date. As part of the charges against Snipes, the government alleges that he fraudulently claimed over $4 million in tax refunds for 1996 and over $7.3 million in tax refunds for 1997. The government said that Snipes used a tax protester idea known as the “861 arguments” to get fraudulent tax refunds (essentially, an argument that the domestic income of U.S. citizens and residents is not taxable).

The government also claims that Snipes mailed the Internal Revenue Service three phony “bills of exchange” totaling $14 million (IRS). Additional charges were that Snipes had not filed his taxes from 1999 to 2004. After being indicted, Snipes sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office on December 4, 2006, in which he claimed to be a “non-resident alien” of the United States. “Freemen,” “Sovereign Citizens,” or “OPCA” (Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument) techniques are prominent in this litigation strategy.

Robert Barnes was hired by Snipes to represent him in court. A jury acquitted Snipes of the felony charges of conspiracy to cheat the government and false claim to the government on February 1, 2008. On three misdemeanor counts, he was convicted of failing to file federal income tax returns (and acquitted on three other “failure to file” charges). As part of the Snipes income tax refund case, his co-defendants Douglas P. Rosile and Eddie Ray Kahn were convicted of conspiracy and false claim charges.

He was sentenced to three years in prison in April 2008 for failing to file federal income tax returns under 26 USC 7203 on April 24 of that year. Ten years in jail for Kahn and four and a half years for Rosile were handed down. In a 35-page ruling, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals for the United States affirmed the conviction of Snipes on July 16, 2010. A federal jail in Pennsylvania, McKean Federal Correctional Institution, received Snipes on December 9, 2010, to begin his three-year term.

Snipes’s appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court on June 6, 2011. On April 2, 2013, Snipes was released from federal prison and completed his home detention period on July 19, 2013. According to the United States Tax Court, the Internal Revenue Service did not abuse its discretion in rejecting an offer in compromise from Snipes and in retaining the notice of federal tax lien in connection with approximately $23.5 million of federal tax liabilities for the tax year 2001 and years 2003 through 2006.
