William Jackson Harper Bio

He was given the name William Fitzgerald Harper when he was born on the 8th of February 1980 in Dallas, Texas. In 2003, he received a degree from the University of Santa Fe. He decided on William Jackson Harper as his stage name since he thought “William Harper” was already taken and he didn’t like the idea of “Fitzgerald” being too long. Jackson, his mother’s maiden name, was chosen as his stage middle name to commemorate her memory. A drama about teens coming to terms with their sexuality, Full Bloom, was Harper’s stage debut in New York City in 2006.

The 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama went to his performance in Manhattan Theatre Club’s production of Lynn Nottage’s Ruined in 2008. He played Danny Rebus in The Electric Company on PBS from 2009 to 2011. For Measure for Measure in 2010 and Titus Andronicus in 2011, he returned to the Anspacher Theater for the Public Theater’s mobile unit productions. Stew and Heidi Rodewald’s musical The Total Bent, in which he played Marty Boy, had its world premiere at New York’s Public Theater in 2012. Ato Blankson-Wood was then developed into the show’s central character.

With roles as James Harrison and Stokely Carmichael respectively in All the Way, Harper made his Broadway debut in 2014. Carrie Coon and co-starred in the Playwrights Horizon Theater production of Placebo in 2015. Harper was cast in A Good Place on NBC in 2016. Before earning the role of Chidi Anagonye, he contemplated quitting the acting business entirely. When Harper was cast, he didn’t know what the play was about. Critics have praised his performance. The main role in Zoe Kazan’s After the Blast at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theatre kept him busy between seasons one and two of the program in 2017.

At Ensemble Studio Theatre in 2018, Harper’s piece Travisville had its world debut. It was revealed in an interview with Bloomberg News that the play was inspired by the displacement of an impoverished African-American neighborhood that was located near the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas. They Remain was released in the same year, and he had a starring role. Midsommar and Dark Waters were two critically appreciated films in which he appeared in 2019. His voice was also used in the first season of the Airship podcast 1865, which chronicles Abraham Lincoln’s final weeks in office following his assassination on April 14, 1865.

Willie Jackson Harper takes center stage in the romance anthology series “Love Life” on HBO Max, portraying a newly-single 30-something Marcus Watkins. William Jackson Harper was nominated for a supporting actor Emmy for his role as Chidi on “The Good Place.” Marcus is clearly a better-dressed man than Harper himself, who admits to dressing in jeans and a T-shirt instead of the tuxedo of his character. To be honest, Harper can empathize with the character’s internal conflict: “I am a late bloomer.

At the age of 41, I still don’t feel like I know what my life is all about. By working with best buddy Yogi (Chris “Comedian CP” Powell), his outspoken sister Ida (Punkie Johnson), and navigating a will-they-or-won’t they romance with Mia Hines (Jessica Williams), Marcus begins to come to terms with his life in the course of a 10-episode season of the show. Keith David, the actor, tells the story of his journey. It would be nice to have ideas that “sound like that to me,” Harper chuckles.

Harper’s thoughts are “far higher voiced” and “stutter more” than those of Harper. When Keith David appears in a film or television show, he never fails to amaze me. My reaction to his numerous talents is equally wonderful and infuriating: You don’t get to be so witty, so great at pathos, and have a voice like his. The one you want is yours! Your first starring part and first executive producing experience are both in “Love Life.”

What was the most difficult part of juggling both? Honestly, the entire process of making the film was difficult. I’m not used to people asking me questions and listening to what I have to say, so it was a new experience for me. To be an actor, you get the script and you have to figure it out yourself. I have to decide when to speak and when to allow others with more experience to do their job. However, it’s a terrific idea to include a few snarky comments as the project is being put together. Describe what drew you to this particular show.

Marcus is the kind of guy who has his life in order at the age of 30, whereas I was in a state of disarray. I was just bouncing from one thing to the next, like a pinball. My late twenties and early thirties were spent chasing rent and attempting to forget about the fact that I was constantly broke. After working on the New York stage for years, Harper made his Broadway debut in 2014. Marcus has a regular job.

He has a wife. He’s done all the things I felt I should have been doing at that point in my life, but I wasn’t even close to it at all. In the same way, he has an overestimation of his knowledge. In the same way that everyone else, he’s struggling to keep up. In all honesty, we’re not doing anything new. It’s a well-known tale that’s easy to identify. It’s a love story populated by real individuals who are all messed up in some way.

Just people trying to find out who they want to be with if they want to be with anyone at all: Who do you want to be with? In my opinion, the stories are incredibly realistic and authentic. It’s not like the movie. You’ve resided in Brooklyn since 2007; the show was filmed there. In your area, how did you become acclimated to walking in someone else’s shoes? Marcus is not me, and I had to remind myself of that.

Getting on stage and playing my own music wasn’t an option. We look and sound alike, but he’s a very different person in many respects. As a result, filming is like a bizarro version of my experiences in New York, where I am close to home, shooting in places that I actually go and hang out in, and remembering how it felt like when I was that age and how I felt too insecure to be myself and hang out in some of these spots in Brooklyn.

Walters, a neighborhood just north of Fort Green Park, was one of the locations we used. Here you’ll find a great atmosphere and delicious fare in one place. At school, everyone is so much better-looking than I am. There were times when I walked by establishments like that and thought, “I can’t go in there. That’s a restaurant where genuine adults go to eat.

A falafel is what I’m looking for.” For the most part, I was a headcase in my 30s. Filming in New York City so soon after the swine flu pandemic was a unique experience. I’m in love with New York City. When I’m there, it’s where I feel most at home. It’s vital to me to be a member of a group of artists that are attempting to get people out of their homes once again. People in New York had to deal with a lot after the storm.

In Los Angeles, I spent most of the pandemic. There was a part of me that wanted to return to the city because it had become a living creature for me. Because New York City was going through some stuff, I decided that if I wasn’t going through it, I needed to be going through it. It warms my heart, not to be all mushy, but every now and again pretending that everything is normal for 30 to 45 seconds makes me happy.

The rebirth of New York is critical to my identity as an adult, and I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Have you become used to playing a romantic protagonist after playing characters in “The Good Place,” “We Broke Up,” and as Royal in “The Underground Railroad”? That’s not going to work for me at all. I maintain my stoicism and my lack of romanticism. When I get these parts, it’s wonderful since they have so much more to offer.

In this case, it’s not the typical romantic lead who goes on a date and wins the girl over. There is no such thing as me. Then again, I can’t wait to play someone who’s a snobbish jerk; I’m still terrified. [Laughs.] According to your own admission, rom-coms aren’t your thing.

In order to prepare for this show, have you studied any new material? I stayed away from rom-coms because I thought our situation was completely different from theirs. In spite of this, I did watch the entire “Before Sunrise,” “Sunset,” and “Midnight” series, which are interesting character studies in which there is a romance aspect, but it is more about people bonding. We’re not going for anything cute, which is what excites me most about the series. It was all about individuals interacting and expressing themselves as much as possible.. Seeing something like that on television is rare and exciting.
