William was born on March 22, 1931, in Montreal to Joseph Shatner, a clothesmaker, and Anna Garmaise. Joseph’s parents were Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. He had minor parts in a children’s radio series of fairy tales when he was younger, but he had planned to join his father’s company until he got the acting bug.

The burgeoning star, like Patrick Stewart, alias Jean-Luc Picard, his renowned ship’s successor, had traditional Shakespearean acting training. After graduating from McGill University with a degree in Commerce in 1952 and being active in student theatrical performances, he moved to Ottawa to work with the Canadian Repertory Company and then to Ontario to work with Sir Tyrone Guthrie’s Stratford Shakespeare Festival. In addition to his Broadway performances, he was in high demand during television’s ‘Golden Age’ in the 1950s, when he played Ranger Bob on Howdy Doody and made guest appearances on series like Alfred Hitchcock Presents and The Twilight Zone.

His first film performance was as a criminal in the 1951 Canadian film The Butler’s Night Off, but his breakthrough came in a supporting part with Yul Brenner in the 1958 film The Brothers Karamazov. The Intruder (1962), directed by Roger Corman, and Judgment at Nuremberg (1962), directed by Stanley Kramer, were his next two films. William met Leonard Nimoy in 1964 when they both appeared in an episode of The Man From UNCLE; Nimoy went on to become a lifelong friend and the best man at William’s third wedding. In 1966, both William and Leonard were cast in the new science fiction show Star Trek, with William playing Captain Kirk and Leonard as the big-eared Vulcan science officer Spock.
