Heywood “Woody” Allen, an American film director, writer, actor, and comedian with a career spanning more than six decades and several Academy Award-winning productions, was born Allan Stewart Konigsberg on November 30, 1935. He started out as a television writer in the 1950s, mostly for Your Show of Shows, when he collaborated with Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Larry Gelbart, and Neil Simon. In addition, he authored a number of volumes with short tales and contributed humorous essays to The New Yorker.

He shared the stage in Greenwich Village with Lenny Bruce, Elaine May, Mike Nichols, and Joan Rivers during the beginning of the 1960s. Instead of using conventional jokes, he created a monologue style there, adopting the character of an educated, anxious, nervous nebbish.  In the middle to end of the 1960s, he put out three comedic albums. His 1964 comedy album, simply named Woody Allen, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album.  Allen was placed fourth on a list of the top 100 stand-up comedians by Comedy Central in 2004.  While Allen was named third best comic in a UK poll.
