Zachary Quinto Bio

Quinto was born in Pittsburgh and raised in the suburb of Green Tree, Pennsylvania. He has a brother and two sisters. He received his education at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic School (closed 2010). Marguerite J. “Margo” (née McArdle), his mother, worked as an investment advisor and later as a magistrate’s office administrator. Quinto’s father, Joseph John “Joe” Quinto, a barber, died when Quinto was seven years old as a result of cancer. Quinto and his brother, Joe, were raised by their mother after their father died.

He was raised as a Catholic. It was his father’s Italian ancestors who raised him, while his mother was of Irish blood. Quinto graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1995, where he participated in musicals and was nominated for the Gene Kelly Award for Best Supporting Actor. He then went on to study drama at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, where he graduated in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in dramatic literature. Quinto came out as gay to the public for the first time in October 2011.

Having witnessed the suicide of gay teenager Jamey Rodemeyer, he stated that “living a gay life without publicly identifying one’s sexual orientation is simply not enough to make any substantial contribution to the enormous effort that remains ahead on the road to true equality.”

In the years leading up to his coming out, Quinto has been an outspoken advocate for homosexual rights and groups such as The Trevor Project. A one-night production of Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays, a benefit staged reading in response to the passage of Proposition 8, was performed in 2009. He also appeared in the play The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, which was based on the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, which was performed in 2010.

Quinto provided a video to the It Gets Better Project, an Internet-based campaign that attempts to prevent suicide among LGBTQAI+ children, which was launched in 2010. Quinto campaigned on behalf of Barack Obama in 2012, and he appeared in the video Obama Pride: LGBT Americans for Obama, which was released at the time. In 2010, Quinto was in a relationship with actor Jonathan Groff, which lasted until 2013.

After meeting Miles McMillan, a model, and singer, in the summer of 2013, Quinto began dating him.  The pair moved into their NoHo, Manhattan condo, which they had acquired together, in early 2015. When they were featured in Vogue magazine in November 2015, it was described as “a power couple whose domain extends over the cinema, fashion, and art scenes.” At the beginning of 2019, the two decided to call it quits on their relationship.

On the heels of claims of sexual attempts toward then-14-year-old actor Anthony Rapp, actor Kevin Spacey decided to come out as part of his response to the charges. He made his television debut in the short-lived series The Others and has since appeared as a guest performer on several shows, including CSI, Touched by an Angel, Charmed, Six Feet Under, and Lizzie McGuire. Quinto announced that Nimoy had granted his consent for the casting of the youthful Spock during a press conference to promote the first new Star Trek picture, which was held in conjunction with the promotion of the first new Star Trek movie.

“I was aware that he had given his okay to the actor who would portray young Spock, so when I was offered the role, I understood right away that it had been done with his blessing.” Quinto’s performance as Spock was praised by director J.J. Abrams in a September 2008 interview, who stated that Quinto “brought a gravitas and a fantastic sense of comedy, which is a wonderful combination since Spock’s character is deceptively complicated.”

When I eventually got to watch the entire movie after working on scenes, it was a revelation for me to realize that he is truly remarkable. I didn’t even realize he was doing things I didn’t notice while we were shooting – these incredible things to track his story.” Quinto also alluded to Star Trek’s historical record of diversity and inclusion in its casting and storytelling, which he said was a source of inspiration for him.
