As a child actor in summer stock at the Red Barn Theatre in Jackson’s Point, Ontario, Palmer earned his first professional acting experience. He was just sixteen years old at the time. Zoie Palmer was also nominated for an Academy Award in 2004. She was voted one of CNN’s “Favorite TV Couples” of all time in 2013 for her role as Lauren in the television series Lost Girl, in which she co-starred with Bo (Anna Silk). In its annual online contest, E! Entertainment Television chose her and Bo as the “Top TV Couple of 2013,” and CNN named them as one of their “Favorite TV Couples of All Time.”

In 1994, Alliance Communications (prior to its merger with Atlantis) partnered with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and a number of smaller independent Canadian producers to launch a television network that would showcase “the best of independently produced movies, drama, comedy, and miniseries from Canada and around the world,” with a strong emphasis on Canadian content and only a small amount of content from the United States. After a brief opening montage and a screening of Monty Python’s Life of Brian, the channel officially launched at midnight on January 1, 1995, as part of its program The Showcase Revue, which was broadcast throughout the day.

The showcase was the logo that was used from 2000 until 2009. This logo was also used until 2009 in conjunction with Showcase Action and Showcase Diva. Action (previously Showcase Action, which was rebranded as the Canadian equivalent of Adult Swim in April 2019) and Showcase Diva (previously Showcase Diva, which was rebranded as the Canadian equivalent of Adult Swim in April 2019) were both born out of Showcase’s digital television service in the 1990s (which was relaunched as a Canadian version of Lifetime in 2012).

A high definition simulcast of the Showcase television show, which originally aired on the Discovery Channel, was launched by Alliance Atlantis on December 19, 2006. The Alliance Atlantis corporation was successful in acquiring entire control of Showcase Entertainment over a period of several years. Because of the explicit programming on Showcase, which was recently acquired by Canwest, the station’s new management believed that the channel was alienating both viewers and advertisers.

The Showcase network received a dramatic rebranding on August 31, 2009, which coincided with the release of a new programming roster that placed a greater emphasis on popular dramas and films. Additionally, Showcase Diva’s logo was updated, and Showcase Action was rebranded to simply Action at the same time as well. Both viewers and advertisers responded well to Canwest’s new programming roster, as was anticipated by the channel’s management.

However, while Showcase continues to broadcast a broader spectrum of drama programming that encompasses a diverse range of themes, its recent successes, particularly in the field of original programming, have come in the areas of science fiction and fantasy programming. When the channel launched its highest-rated series premiere in history in 2010, it was aided by a new original series, the supernatural crime thriller Lost Girl, which attracted approximately 400,000 viewers in its first week of airing.

In less than two years, another original science-fiction series, Continuum, premiered to a record-breaking average audience of 900,000 viewers, easily smashing the previous mark by a substantial margin. In connection with its acquisition of Canwest and Goldman Sachs’ investment in CW Media, Shaw Communications bought control of Showcase on October 27, 2010, marking the company’s second change of ownership in as many years.

The Fall 2013 season of Showcase Theatre Company will be marked by the introduction of a new tagline and branding campaign, “Character is Everything.” Promos told in first-person by characters from Showcase’s series served as the high point of the series’ four-week marketing effort, which was aimed at bringing attention to the show. Stitch Media was tasked with the design and development of an interactive website.
