William Andrews used to play running back in the NFL. He had time on the field with future NFL stars James Brooks and Joe Cribbs during his time at Auburn University. Atlanta Falcons picked Andrews up in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft. While Andrews’ undergraduate career was spent mostly in the blocking back role, his professional career saw him flourish as a blocker, runner, and pass catcher. In his first game with the Falcons, the team beat the New Orleans Saints 40-34, and he ended up with 167 yards running. Andrews has 1,023 running yards and was chosen to the all-rookie team after playing in 15 games as a rookie. In 1980, with Andrews on the team, the Falcons went 12-4 and won the NFC West. As a whole, he gained 1,308 yards on the ground, with an average of 4.9 yards per carry, and added another 452 yards in the air on 51 receptions. Andrews was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the first time this season, the first of four consecutive seasons in which he would be thus honored.


Later in his NFL career, Ronnie Lott would recall a head-on collision he had with Andrews on December 19, 1982, when the San Francisco 49ers faced the Atlanta Falcons. Andrews not only finished first in the NFL in yards from scrimmage once (1981), but also three times in the top four. In both 1981 and 1983, he was honored as the Falcons’ MVP. The Falcons honored him by retiring his jersey number 31 in 2004. By 1996, Andrews had earned a spot in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Andrews was arrested in Cobb County, Georgia, on March 30th, 2012, for civil contempt related to unpaid child support.
