In Oshawa, Ontario, Cook was born. She attended Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute while spending the majority of her childhood in the adjacent city of Whitby. Three people share her family: Nathan, Paul, and Angela. Due to her severe astigmatism, Cook was legally proclaimed blind in the second grade; yet, she continued to wear contacts and thick “coke bottle” spectacles to correct her eyesight. She had surgery in 2007, and a lens implant was used to treat the impairment.  Cook recounted her early years as being “mean” to other children, as well as how she “truly couldn’t see” and how “everything appeared like a blur of colour with no outlines.” She added that at the time of her diagnosis, she was struggling in school and that first, people assumed she had a reading problem since she couldn’t read, but in actuality, her inability to see the board had an impact on her ability to distinguish letters and understand the sounds they made.

Cook, a dancer from the age of four, started studying jazz, tap, and ballet classes. She claimed that because she did not have to memorise or read anything as a child, dance kept her interested.  She spent a lot of time dancing competitively before deciding at age 16 that she wanted to try acting. Cook has said that if she hadn’t chosen to become an actress, she most likely would have opened a little dancing studio somewhere. Cook also taught dance when she was younger. She stated that she still tap dances in an interview.
