In September 2003, the Adelaide United Football Club was established, and it joined the National Soccer League (NSL) in advance of the 2003/04 season. This was done in response to the departures of both West Adelaide and Adelaide City from the competition. Basil Scarsella was chosen to serve as the organization’s first Chairman, and the South Australian Soccer Federation as well as Adelaide Builder and property developer Gordon Pickard were instrumental in the decision. The newly established club, known as the Reds, was given the moniker of the “People’s Team” due to the fact that it represented all people living in South Australia under a unified footballing brand.

As a result of the dissolution of the NSL in 2004, a brand-new national league competition was established in the shape of the Hyundai A-League. Adelaide has participated in this tournament ever since the league’s start in August of 2005. Since then, the club has expanded to the point that it now includes a women’s squad and a youth team, both of which were founded in 2008 and compete in the Westfield W-League and the Foxtel Y-League, in addition to the local National Premier League.

Coopers Stadium, which boasts a capacity of 17,000 and is considered one of the greatest venues in the nation to play and watch football, is where Adelaide United plays their home matches. Coopers Stadium is recognized as one of the top venues in the country. The Reds have also had a great deal of success, having won their first-ever Championship in 2016, as well as the Premiership title in the same year to complete an unprecedented double. United has also won a record three FFA Cups and is the first team to win the trophy in consecutive years, having done so in 2014, 2018, and 2019. This makes United the all-time leader in FFA Cup victories.

The Reds established themselves as a dominating force in the Hyundai A-League very fast and went on to win the first Premiership. They also broke many records throughout their run. Chongqing Qu scored three goals that were in the top 10 for the season, Louis Brain scored the quickest goal in history at 13 seconds, and the team had the best record on the road. In the 2006–2007 season, the Reds made it all the way to the championship game but ultimately came in second place against Melbourne Victory. United did not make it to the finals series during the 2007/08 season, but they started their second adventure in the AFC Champions League with a lot of success, finishing first in their group to advance to the elimination round.

After a remarkable cup run that brought them to the attention of fans across the world, Adelaide United qualified for the 2008 AFC Champions League for the 2008–2009 season. As a consequence of reaching the final, Adelaide was given the opportunity to take part in the famous FIFA Club World Cup in Japan. There, the club achieved a respectable fifth-place finish and was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award. In addition, Adelaide would round up the domestic season by competing in the Hyundai A-League Grand Final for the second time.

The previous season, Adelaide United finished in last place on the table. However, in the 2010-2011 campaign, they played an entertaining style of football that included many goals and moved up the standings to finish third. However, in the second week of the finals, the Reds were defeated at home by Gold Coast United by a score of 3-2, which was a devastating result.

As a result of this season, Marcos Flores won the Johnny Warren medal, which is presented to the league’s best player, and Sergio van Dijk, an Adelaide striker, won the Hyundai A-League Golden Boot, which is given to the player with the most goals scored at the end of the regular season. Both of these accomplishments were firsts for Adelaide. In both the 2012–13 and 2013–14 seasons, United finished in the top six in the league, although they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

In the 2014–15 season, Adelaide finally broke its trophy drought by winning the Westfield FFA Cup for the first time under the direction of Head Coach Josep Gombau. The match against Perth Glory in the championship game was won by Adelaide by a score of 1-0. The Reds went on to finish in third place during the regular season, but they were knocked out of the playoffs in the semi-finals.

Guillermo Amor, a legendary player for Barcelona, has been named the club’s next head coach beginning with the 2015–16 season. After a rough start, the Reds were winless and positioned at the bottom of the standings after the first eight rounds of the competition. On the other hand, Adelaide was able to do the seemingly impossible by going on a winning run of 14 games in a row en route to claiming the Premiers’ Plate.

A few weeks later, Adelaide won the double and capped off the club’s most successful season to date by securing an elusive Championship by defeating the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1. This victory allowed Adelaide to secure the Championship and win the double.

Ahead of the 2017–18 season, Marco Kurz was given the role of Head Coach and tasked with leading a Reds squad that included a significant number of new players further up the standings. A new coaching staff was brought in, and with it came a number of new player additions that were intended to overhaul and enhance the team. In contrast to the more Spanish possession-based mentality that prevailed before the advent of the German strategist, the latter instituted a high-pressing approach that was both dynamic and intense.

After an incredible run, Adelaide was able to compete in the final of the Westfield FFA Cup; nevertheless, they were defeated by Sydney FC by a score of 2-1 after extra time. United’s performance in the league was also very good as Kurz led Adelaide to fifth place, but they were ousted in the first round of the playoffs after surrendering a goal only seconds before the game’s end. Near the close of the season, there was also a change in the club’s ownership, and Piet van der Pol, a Dutchman, led a group of investors to become the club’s new chairman.

In preparation for the 2018/19 season, Adelaide made a number of additions, the most notable of which was the return of Craig Goodwin. The Reds qualified for the FFA Cup Final for the second season in a row and met Sydney FC once again in a rerun of the match that decided the championship a year earlier. However, history was not to repeat itself as Adelaide won the FFA Cup Final 2018 at Coopers Stadium with a score of 2-1. With this victory, the South Australians became the first team to ever win the trophy on two separate occasions.

The Reds were able to achieve fourth place in the A-League standings thanks to their strong finish, and they went on to win their home Elimination Final against Melbourne City thanks to a stunning 1-0 extra-time victory. A week later, Adelaide traveled to meet the minor premiers in Perth Glory, and after falling down 2-0, the Reds scored twice, including a 90+4′ minute equalizer to force extra time. However, the Glory won the match in extra time. But when the game ended tied at 3-3 after 120 minutes of play, United would go on to lose in a gut-wrenching penalty shootout by a score of 5-4.

The 2019/20 season got off to an auspicious start for Adelaide with a thumping 4-0 victory against Melbourne City in the FFA Cup Final 2019. With this victory, Adelaide became the first club in the history of the tournament to win it three times and successfully defend its championship. In front of a crowd of 14,920 at Coopers Stadium, Al Hassan Toure scored the game’s first goal, and then Ben Halloran, Nikola Mileusni, and Riley McGree scored in the second half to cap off a night that will go down in Coopers Stadium history. After the COVID-19 mandated break, Carl Veart was promoted to the position of temporary boss for the rest of the season before being offered the position of Head Coach on a permanent basis for a two-year deal.

In Veart’s first full season as manager, the Reds finished in the fifth position, and they won the Elimination Final on the road against the Brisbane Roar. However, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by Sydney FC by a score of 2-1. In the 2021/22 season, Adelaide once again finished in fourth place, which qualified them for the playoffs, and they won the home Elimination Final against Central Coast Mariners by a score of 3-1. After that, the Reds competed against Melbourne City over the course of two legs for a spot in the championship match. United would go on to lose the match 2-1 on aggregate after failing to win in extra time in the second leg after playing to a scoreless draw at Coopers Stadium.
