Trebek was born in Sudbury, Canada, a big city in northern Ontario, on July 22, 1940. His mother, Lucille Trebek, was a French-Canadian woman of some descent to the First Nations, and his father, George Trebek, was an immigrant from Ukraine who worked at a local hotel as a chef. “My father was a heavy drinker who never missed a day of work in his life,” Trebek says. Trebek identifies his father as a hoarder of knickknacks that, years later, had a way of proving useful. “His basic philosophy was not to throw anything away because it’s going to come in handy someday,” he says of his father.

Trebek was a bright and curious boy from a young age, attending Jesuit schools until he was 12 years old, when he decided to leave Sudbury for the University of Ottawa High School in the Canadian capital. “There is a more distant recollection of Sudbury,” he now says, “since I was born and raised there, but I left to go to boarding school.”
Trebek went on to the University of Ottawa to study philosophy after graduating from high school in 1957. Trebek dropped out of philosophy to seek a career in journalism after graduating in 1961.

He landed his first job with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC TV, as a fill-in reporter and newscaster. While he quickly gained a reputation for his calm attitude on the television, he chose in 1966 to change his attention from journalism to the more lucrative area of game show hosting. He became the host of Aim for the Top, the Canadian quiz show that pitted high school student teams against each other in academic competitions. Trebek graduated in 1970 to host the more popular Canadian game show, Jackpot, nationally televised.

Trebek left his native country in 1973 to seek a career in Hollywood, the home of the biggest television stars. His first American television appearance was as the host of The Wizard of Odds, a short-lived game show that premiered in 1973. In 1974, Trebek signed on to host its replacement, another game show named High Rollers.

The show lasted just one season. Trebek anchored the show from 1974-76 and again from 1978-80, through a series of two-year runs on NBC.
