When the track hosted its inaugural NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race in 1989, it was there that the native of San Rafael, California received her first taste of NASCAR. She was just 10 years old at the time, but she had already made up her mind that she wanted to compete there at the top level of the sport. After a wait of seventeen years, she is finally making progress toward achieving her goal.

Since she was 17 years old, Duncan has participated in competitions, and she has consistently won. She drove for the first three years of her life and won over 40 main events and three championships in her first three years of competition in the National Auto Sport Association and the Sports Car Club of America. Duncan made the switch to stock cars in 2003 after competing successfully on many road course circuits. During this time, Duncan amassed a great deal of success. Duncan was the first female driver to win the Rookie of the Year award in the Late Model Division at Hickory (North Carolina) Motor Speedway during her maiden year competing in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series.
