Essayist and writer André Aciman was born in Egypt, although he now lives in the United States. Before relocating to New York City in 1968, he spent his formative years in Alexandria and Rome, where he attended English language schools as part of his bilingual Jewish family. He graduated from Lehman College with a BA in English & Comparative Literature in 1973, then went to Harvard University for an MA and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature. After that, he lectured on literary theory or Proust at the Graduate School of education of the City University of New York and taught French literature at Princeton and Bard College. He also shared his knowledge of the craft with students at Cooper Union & Yeshiva University.

The Whiting Award was given to Aciman for his book Out of Egypt (1995), or about his childhood as a Jewish youngster in post-colonial Egypt and has gained a lot of positive critical acclaim. He has also written three more novels and four other non-fiction works; one of the novels, Call Me by Your Name (2007), was made into a movie in 2017 by Luca Guadagnino and James Ivory, starring Armie Hammer & Timothée Chalamet. A Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction was given to Call Me by Your Name in 2007.
