Cadiff is a local of Newton, Massachusetts who attempted to enrol in pre-med at Harvard University before being dissuaded by his poor performance in science. In the Spring of 1974, he assisted the director of Harvard’s production of Kiss Me Kate, which he had studied in depth as a part of his focus in theatrical history and literature. Then he dove headfirst into directing college theatre shows. He met legendary Broadway producer Hal Prince while he was a student.In 1977, when Cadiff had graduated with the highest honours possible (magna cum laude), Prince gave him a job as assistant stage manager for the Broadway production of On the Twentieth Century, and he relocated to New York to begin his professional life.


He went on to write and direct his own plays, such as the critically acclaimed musical Brownstone, the off-Broadway hit 3 Men Naked from the Waist Down, and the Tony Award–winning Broadway and Off-Broadway hit MAIL.He first directed for Growing Pains, then for Empty Nest, two successful sitcoms, before making the transition to television. Cadiff directed and produced the popular Tim Allen comedy Home Improvement, for which he received two awards: the People’s Choice Award and the Humanitas Award. He won a Genesis Award and an International Monitor Award for his work as both executive producer and director on Michael J. Fox’s comedy Spin City. Cadiff’s first foray into feature picture filmmaking was Universal Studios’ version of the classic TV show Leave it to Beaver (1997).
